Thanks Arie, so you think it is a malware, none was found in the earlier scan but after your prompt i did a scan and sure enough it some trojan appeared. I am now putting an active anti Malware into the system and then see if it can effectively block them out. Then I will come back.

You should just go ahead and post the requested logs in the Malware and Virus Removal forum.

Arie, I have gone thru this type of cycle a number of times and i found it very time consuming. Moreoever even if it can be found and fix it will occur on another XPWin.sp3 machine.

This particular generic host error comes too often in winxp.sp3 and it seems to be associated with svchot.exe. What I really need is a PREVENTION scheme. Based on the advice from this forum, i already have antivirus, spybot and malware on all pcs.

Since antiMalware is not active, i just switch to active antiMalware-Pro and see where i go.

If any members have other thoughts, appreciate comments.

Nothing will protect you from your own actions. If you aren't aware of the dangers certain actions carry, you will get infected, no matter what 'protection' software you run. You see, the software vendors are always one or two steps behind.

Right Arie, but most of the pc only check email, open mail only from known sources and yet with the various protection programs, it seems to get through too often and it is the same rogue in the network.

    Thanks Good Spy

Downloaded Sec Essential and see where it go. I have used it before but for this particular PC, some how it did not work so well. Hence i tried with Avast, then Avira.

The funny thing is on 5 other PC with Win7.32bit using Essentials, Malwarebytes, Win7.32, for months not a single Malware appear during the scan using AntiMalwareBytes. But with xpwin.sp3, trojan, backdoor-?? and numerous malware always occur. When that happens Host and SvHost appears; win explorer & network access slows down or hang.

    Any observations to share!

Thanks mate for the mini avalanche; except for SuperAnti & those relating to Firefox, rest are familiar; the issue is what is the right combination without overlooking the sys - What say you.

Meanwhile will certainly work on it to further PREVENT.

So far the Sec Essential seems to be working on the xpwin.sp3 however ..

After 48 hours of installing Sec Essential, on scanning with AntiMal-Byte, found the following rogue BackDoor.bot. Now checking for critical updates from Ms.

    CheEers!

At one point a couple years ago, close to 50 XP boxes were all running the above with nary a problem.

    Thanks Doc

I am going to install all the above to see what happens.

Meanwhile backdoor.bot keeps coming back and hangs the freshly installed winxp.sp3 of least then 1 week ago. There is minimum activity from the PC to the web, the rogue is coming in from the LAN.

Dr: Vista being so unwanted seems also relatively free from such attacks.

I need to keep to xpwin as some older applications only runs services in this OS. Meanwhile the to date good news is with SuperAntiSpyDr!!, lots more are detected and it seems to be actively blocking new ones.

Only time will tell if all goes well. Hence i keep posting to this thread how things develop ... conclusion XPWin has too many foes and tunnels. Regards.

Thanks mate, i am aware of virtual machines. One question bugging the tinkering: The xpwin requirement is to start a service in the LAN. Would you think, the the virtual pc, once started the particular service will become availiable for win7 os's users?

    PS After tinkering:
The Service was started in the virtual PC, but is not availiable in the workgroup of the LAN. How to get the Virtual PC to join the workgroup of the LAN, don't seem to able to find the workgroup within the Virtua lPC

    Sorry late response, busy.

Dr; joining a workgroup is fine in normal lan. In xpmode virtual machine, the workgroup in the lan proper can also be exposed by using the bridge in the virtual pc settings. Irrespective, the service started in virual pc will not be availiable to the lan proper.

I still hope to put a stop to the attacks in xpwin.lan. There are not rogues so there must be a direct protection solution.

    Hi members, for sharing feedback

The problem PC with XPWin.sp3 is now free of this generic host error (associated with svchot.exe) for more than 2 weeks now. Following are the free protection ware I use that seem to stop this:

Security Essentials with all Ms updates
    Spybot
    SuperAntispyWare
    SpywareBlaster
    AntiMalwareByte
    Sphinx FireWall
