    Hello,
So I have recently had this issue (error code 1336) while installing Java. A few FYI's before we get too in depth here about my system: (sorry if its a lot! I just want to let you know my situation!)

I have 2 hard drives, D and C; the D is my boot drive containing windows 7 ultimate 64 bit. It is a solid state 30 GB. For this reason, I make an effort to install almost all of my programs on my TB Hard Disk C drive. (My D drive, or boot drive, only has about 1 GB of free space, but that has been ample space for installing all previous programs when I have tried)

I recently uninstalled a previous version of Java (outdated by a few months). There was a separate issue I was having that would not let me uninstall this version of Java from my computer, even as administrator, and through control panel. Microsoft Fix It helped. It said that there was an issue uninstalling it because there was another program in the process of uninstalling too. I believe this issue was with AVG, which expired. I tried uninstalling that, but it froze in the process, and became pesky to remove from my system. Fix It helped with that as well after several restarts. I now have Comodo Dragon Security. UAC is off, and I am administrator always.

I then downloaded the newest 64 bit version of Java for windows 7. The file is called: "jre-7u4-windows-x64.exe" I am sure the file downloaded completely too. I am only able to click 'Install' button or to change the install location before it bringing up the install window when it has the error. The error happens immediately before loading anything.

**The actual message displayed once I have chosen the install location is: "(Error 1336) There was an error creating a temporary file that is needed to complete this installation "

To try and troubleshoot this before, I have tried clearing out my temp folder by entering %temp%, closing all unnecessary programs, and deleting all files not in use. I have also disabled my firewall and internet security. The program, "javaRa" did not help either. These unsuccessful solutions, and also suggestions in this resolved post did not help: http://www.windowsbbs.com/other-pc-software/85393-java-problem.html

Java does not offer support on their website for this issue, and I wold rather not pay for a rep to work on the problem with me. A friend of mine could not figure this out either, but he suggested re-installing windows. Because of how long it would take to do that, and because of the way my computer is now, that isn't an option.

Any help or experiences you could share I wold be grateful for! :)

Welcome to the boards. Hope you enjoy your stay here.

AVG free does not expire. The paid one would. Which version were you using?
I don't think that AVG would have anything to do with your problem. I ran it for years and years on several PC's with XP and Win 7 both 32 nad 64 bit.

For the last couple of years, Java would uninstall the older version when updating to the newer version automatically.

Hi, and thanks. Hm, I guess I was just trying to add that I was having problems with the trial version of AVG to see if it linked to anything else (both java and AVG weren't uninstalling). But I do not think it is that. Where my problem is, is with installing new Java. I get that error message 1336. I have cleaned out the temp folder; also, I uncompressed the whole appdata folder just in case and rebooted several times. What could cause this error?:confused:I downloaded and installed the newest trial version of AVG 64 bit for windows my norton 360 expired, and I needed protection quickly

The error (1336) you get is from the MSINSTALLER:

There are a few steps to try to resolve this.

First try to empty user and system "temp" folders:

    • %windir%\temp
    • %LOCALAPPDATA%\Temp

If that still doesn't work, check if the Windows Installer service is disabled on your machine:

    • Go to Start and in the Search programs and files box type Run, and click Run on the Start menu.
    • In the Run box type services.msc" and press OK
    • Scroll down to the listing for the service named Windows Installer.
    • Double-click on Windows Installer and on the General tab check the value in the Startup type: field. If it's currently set to Disabled, then this is the problem. Change it by selecting Manual from the drop-down box.

    Tried, failed :(

Thank you for helping so far,
I tried this, it was already on Manual. I then set to disabled, then shut down, then turned it back to manual, rebooted again, and did not work. I emptied as many files out of the temp folder as I could as well.

*Another piece of information that may be useful: because AVG froze while uninstalling, I had to shut down my computer. It never would uninstall after that. Eventually, I just went into anywhere I could find it installed on the C and D drive and deleted as many avg related files as I could. AVG now no longer appears on the uninstall programs list through control panel, although I see occasional traces of it around; for example, when I right click some flies, it still brings up, "scan with AVG ". That seems wrong

Also, Java could have not installed because of this. I then did the same thing for Java. I now realize this was stupid of me, but it isnt like i had a choice; AVG froze during uninstallation anyway. There is an 'avgwd' service listed in task manager that has 'AVG Watchdog' in the decription. It is stopped, but will not start, and will not let me see where it is located. I assume the problem now is that there is some sort of conflict between which files are where and where the registry(I think) thinks the files are?

I also get an error 1500 as well. And I apologize for the lateness of my reply.

    Issue ...averted?

I would say that I took the long way around the issue by reinstalling windows 7. It was an issue in the registry. Files had been deleted from he hard drive improperly as opposed to being properly removed with an uninstall. Nothing would install or uninstall after that anyways, so the only simple resolve was to uninstall windows...despite the enormous hassle. Thank you very much for your help, I apologize this was not oostende sooner
