I lost all sound on my HP desktop, I go to sound and audio device properties and I cant seem to activate it. I am using the built in speaker. I also checked the hardware devices and there is no conflict, it say's everything is working.
So I have no speaker or volume control on my task bar. I have tried the troubleshooting exercises but no luck.
I would appreciate some help, My operating system is Windows XP.

On my desktop I have model HST NC.016P.SF HP Compaq AMD Athlon(TM)64X2 dual core.
I did a system search and it idintified my computer as HP Compaq DC5700 PC series.

The built in system speaker is always on, and used for music and communication.
I have tried your sugestions, thanks but no luck as yet.

Hi, try Uninstalling in Device Manager > Shut down > Reboot and see if Windows installs it again.
Have you updated Drivers for Sound System? Neil.

Hi lloyd, Welcome to Windowsbbs! :)

Adding to what Neil said, is the sound device listed in device manager? What sound device is installed on your system? Did the loss of sound just happen randomly?

It sounds to me like you need to get updated drivers for your sound device in order to get it working again.

Also please enter your System Details. It helps us in answering your questions.

Note: A common error is to forget to show your System Details in your profile:

Make sure to do the above when entering your System Details, thanks.

    Is Volume Control ticked on,
    look here

    Go to Control Panel.
Double click on Sound and Audio Devices to open.
In the open window, select Volume in the menu bar.
Tick the box Place volume icon in the taskbar.

    What built-in speaker?

Do you mean the little piezoelectric single frequency beeper on the motherboard?

What's the model number of the HP desktop?

Dr. we are still waiting for lloyd to fill in his System Details. Lloyd, if you go to FileHippo and have a look around, try Everest Home to find out whats in your comp. Cheers Neil.
