music has hiccups when played from WD 500G External drive using USB hookup and Windows 7. It does it with Windows media player as well as a few other programs like VLC. Another Drive hooked into the system (WD External 250g) plays perfectly.

Could be an issue with the transfer rate or a failing HD.

Start of with de-fragmenting the drive and if that doesn't solve the problem then assuming both drives are the same connection I'd run WD's Diagnostics on the 500G.

(FWIW Hiccups are not uncommon this time of year hic :D)

de-fragmenting the drive and running dianostics didn't seem to help. The drive seems to be functional in every other way except it has to hic-cup once (about 25-40 sec into the song) when attempting to play music.

To confirm that this is an external hard drive issue does a hic-cupping song play without interruption if you copy it to the computer hard drive?

yes, copy to C: will be OK and most of the time a hiccup does not re-occur if you replay the song. Also, Some songs don't Hiccup and some do, making it kind of random. The source drive has never hiccupped. This Drive is part of my backup system. Once A Month, A 100 Gig File (with many folders) is copied from the source Drive J to Drive K using a program named Unstoppable Copier. I don't normally play these files, but when I do, the hiccup problem might start. I have Defragged the K drive and replaced the USB cable.

Are the externals all USB 2 - if the drive in question is USB 1 the transfer rate is extremely slow.

Are your USB ports all USB 2?

Please enter your System Details. It helps us in answering your questions!

The drive is powered by a 12 volt power transformer that plugs into a 120 volt wall plug.

This is a tough one, the only thing that I can think off, is that since it is intermittent, that at the times it has the hiccups, is when your backup program wants to do something, being active and should you happen to play music, that you will a interference of some sort.
Since it does not happen with your other external that does not have the backup program installed.
This is just a stab in the dark, but all that I can think off at the moment.

I have had some success using DPC Latency to find hiccups when playing music http://www.thesycon.de/eng/latency_check.shtml

I have removed the nero backup function from my machine which was using the drive (K) to write back-up files without my knowledge. So I'm thinking backup was intermittantly interfering with my music at some level. For the last couple of days, It seems to be fixed. So, Thank you Hawk22 for your solution and all the others for your help.
