I had a company issued laptop, dell d620 with XP. The company filed bankruptcy in August, 2007 notifying employees by email that we no longer had jobs. I still have the computer (subsequently bought a different one) and now all these years later, would like to make sure everything is off the computer before I get rid of it. Problem: On logging in to windows: Message: System could not log you on. Contact your system administrator. How do I get around this log in so that I can get to the computer?? Thanks.

Hi sahlstedt, Welcome to Windowsbbs! :)

Was the computer running on a domain or is it part of a workgroup? If the system was part of a domain and then you removed the domain then that could be why you are receiving the error message. More information here, You cannot log on after you remove the computer from the domain.

If you can't login normally then see if you can boot into Safe Mode and login using the local administrator account.

Also please enter your System Details. It helps us in answering your questions.

Note: A common error is to forget to show your System Details in your profile:

Make sure to do the above when entering your System Details, thanks.

Assuming that you only want to wipe the hard disk clean, there is no need to log on. Just download Darik's Boot And Nuke utility, make a cd, boot from it & let the program do its work.
