Good morning, I have a Dell Dimensions laptop D520 with Windows Vista business SP2 and Office 2007, IE8.
The wireless is not connecting - The system identifies that there are wireless networks but as soon as I try to connect, windows explorer stops working, closes and reopens and never lets me get past this point. If I connect through a cable the internet connects without a problem.
Also the update for IE9 always fails to install. Other updates install as long as I install them manually one by one. I had given up trying to do the update, but I wonder if my wireless connection issue could be related.
If any of you can help me restoring the wireless function without having to re-install everything, I will be really grateful

    Hello again.
Followed all instructions given by the malware group and nothing was found. After scanning the computer and sending back all the logs, no malware was detected. I was sent back here.
I have AVG 2012 free edition.
The internet connects only through a cable connection.
As soon as I try to connect wireless, windows explorer stops, closes, reopens and back again.
Could anything else be the problem?
    Thank you,
    Patricia

Dear Arie, in trying to update Java I got this warning: "lib\plugin.jar: Old file not found. However, a file of the same name was found. No update done since file contents do not match." Clicked OK, then this error message appeared "Java (TM) Update fails to apply changes to your system." Clicked OK. Another window opened "Error 1722. There is a problem with this Windows Installer package. A program run as part of the setup did not finish as expected. Contact your support personnel or package vendor. "

    Download and run JavaRa.

First select Remove Older Versions, if succeeded go again to the Java Download site and get the latest.

Arie, Java 6 Update 29 is installed after deinstalling the previous versions.
As you think there may be an infection due to outdated Java versions, I removed AVG 2012 (which was not accusing any virus), and installed Avast instead. It did not find anything either.
    JavaRa did not install.
Windows explorer stopped working and restarted again. I tried to run the e-scan from e-Trust as suggested in the page for windows explorer crashes sent in your previous post, but it failed. It starts the download and installation and at the end, a message pops up, it says "failed to load scan engine ".

Hi Patricia. You need to run the ShellexView program and disable all non microsoft shell extensions and see if Windows Explorer still crashes using the link Arie posted above.

Hi Evan, I cannot run it because everytime I try, Windows explorer stops working, closes and reopens. I cannot get past that point. I get as far as clicking the download, the files show up on my screen, and as I click to extract all files... Windows explorer stops.
This happened with the shell extensions and with the e-scan...

Try starting the computer in Safe Mode with Networking and see if the same issue occurs. Reboot the computer and after the BIOS screen loads, begin tapping the F8 key to bring up the advanced boot options menu. Select Safe Mode with Networking in the list and hit enter.

See if downloading ShellexView in Safe Mode with Networking works.

I didn't say you where infected... I said it would be something of a miracle that you would not be... and a Malware scan didn't show any, so count yourself lucky.

I can only suggest you try a Windows Repair Install, or a clean install. There's a good chance a Repair install won't make a difference, and you'll have to do a clean install.

I received a request to mark the status of my issue.
I am still trying to resolve it.
As I tried to repair the installation, I could not do it. My original CD does not have SP1 or SP2 which came as downloads in the update process.
I cannot do a repair installation now as a result of my original CD being a previous version. I do not have a disk with Vista SP1 or SP2 to repair the installed software on my computer.
I cannot do a clean Installation because I will lose the license to two translation programs if I do so.
Searching for solutions, there are instructions on the web to slipstream a disk with SP2 as long as I have an original disk with Vista SP1. But unfortunately, my original windows Vista does not have any of the SPs.
I tried to get support from Microsoft and got nowhere, they sent me automated messages directing me to the same pages I've already covered with no result.
As my original CD for Vista does not have the SPs then Microsoft does not recognize my product ID# anymore.
It looks like Microsoft just dumped all of us who bought vista when it was first released despite us having downloaded the SP1 and SP2.
If you can direct me as to how to slipstream a disk with SP2 for my computer given that I have the original windows Vista with no SPs. I’d be grateful.
I don’t see other options left for me.
I found this warning on http://www.msfn.org/board/topic/134...ndows-vista-w-sp1/page__p__873460#entry873460 forum: “the tool is already out, but it's not recommend, because Slipstreaming the Sp2 ONLY works if you have a Original MS DVD with Sp1 included!

If you slipstream the Sp1 into a RTM and next Sp2 into the Image you will kill the Image. If you install it, the installation will fail! This is a limitation of the servicing stack and that's the cause why MSFT disabled the slipstreaming option in Windows Vista / Windows 7.”

I just realized that my system description is wrong I have a Dell Latitude D520 (not Dimensions), 2GB RAM, Windows Vista updated to SP2 via downloads. Avast AV installed last week (AVG 2012 before that), Office 2007, IE8

The question was to continue/conclude and mark as solved if it was resolved

You won't. Now if you mean that you lost the registration details & therefor would be unable to reinstall the software, you should contact the software author(s) and get that resolved. Your HD could fail tomorrow, then what?

Your product key has nothing to do with the SP version. But yea, slipstreaming Vista (or Win7 for that matter), is much more complicated then Slipstreaming XP.

I would not want to be using a system that is so broken that updates aren't installing. This means that sooner or later your system will be compromised because you won't have the latest security patches.

At this point I would not trust your system with any (personal) information & suggest you bite the bullet, format & reinstall.

    Closing this post

Dear Arie and Evan, I think I'll stop for now. The issue is not resolved, but I've spent hours trying to figure out how to fix this without any results.
Thank you for the help and guidance.
I was not ble to find an option to close the thread. Under the thread tools I can mark it as solved, but that would not be accurate.

Your Welcome. Sorry we couldn't fix your problem but sometimes Windows can get so corrupted that the only way to actually fix the problem is to perform a clean install. Its not easy sometimes but it might be your only option.
