I am running XP Pro, IE8 with SP3. This is a new install into a custom built computer. I was having a blue screen problem, and this disappeared, now after I've been using the computer for maybe 1 hr. or 5 hrs., no real pattern, it will freeze and within seconds, the screen goes black. The fans continue to run and I can push the small thin button on top of the handle (not the main power button) and it will reboot and run perfectly. I know this problem has been seen many times, and can be caused by a number of items, one being heat. I've run a heat test, and it appears everything is fine. Anyone who has seen this problem, and can possibly help me, I would greatly appreciate it.

Could be anything. Since you haven't provide many details, I don't think anybody would be able to hazard a guess. We need more details like if it happens with one software/app only, any particular place, on web etc.

Please enter your System Details. It helps us in answering your questions!

As rsinfo has said, more detail would help but try this:

Blow all dust out of the m/b and re-seat all connectors.
Remove and clean contacts on RAM and re-seat.
Do the same with any cards you have installed.

You may have to remove CPU and cooler and clean and replace thermal paste.

What environment is the PC in?
Is there adequate ventilation around the unit?

Let's know how you get on. Neil.

Hi puppypaws. In addition to following the above advice, if you haven't done so already I would download Open Hardware Monitor. Run the program and you can use it to monitor the temperatures in your computer.

I would post the temps of your computer components in your next reply so we can get a better understanding of whether heat is causing the problem or if the cause is something else.

Well your temps are normal So I don't think its heat thats causing the issue here.

Do you have any components overclocked? Does the computer freeze when your computer is performing specific tasks like watching videos, playing games, etc. or is the behavior happening at complete random?

Have you tried booting the computer into Safe Mode and seeing if you experience the issue there?

It has no pattern of any type, as a matter of fact it has not frozen once since around 8:00 am yesterday morning, and the computer has been running the entire time with task being perform all but around 6 hrs. of that time.

When it does it again maybe we can isolate it in the event log.

Ok. Keep us posted and check Event Viewer for any events that could be logged regarding the system freezes.

I will, thanks for your help, I will definitely let you know what transpires. I have gone another 14 hrs. since the computer was put back into use and not one blip. This becomes somewhat mind boggling at times, but I am not complaining if it never reproduces the problem. I honestly do not know how this could be possible since it was freezing at least one or two times a day. I will say that I updated the graphics driver, but it crashed twice within a 3 or 4 minute period the next morning after the update, but has not crashed since.
