A friend bought a used laptop and asked me to restore it to factory default. I did. All seems to be working just fine. Direct connection to Internet works just fine. But, when I connect via wireless it connects to my router but has no Internet connectivity.

Acer Extenza 5420, Vista 32bit, with Ahteros AR5007e Wireless adaptor

    My daughters laptop connects normally.

    I'm confused.

Start by posting some network details. On the affected laptop, run these commands:

    cmd /c ipconfig /all>%temp%\$.$&notepad %temp%\$.$

    cmd /c ping 127.0.0.1>%temp%\$.$&notepad %temp%\$.$

    and post the output.

Your router may be using MAC Address filtering or may be limiting the amount of clients. Check the router settings.

I didn't see anything showing it was using MAC address filtering and I saw no setting for limiting clients.

    I may be missing something....

Can it ping a Website? or ping the router?

The data above shows you are connected to router.

Two things weird here. First the Connection-specific DNS Suffix. I have no idea if certain routers add this when running their setup program, but IMHO this should be empty for almost all 'home users'.

Second is the extremely long Lease time. Never seen that so extreme. That's something that you should be able to change in your router. I'm not familiar with Belkin routers, check the website/manual for your model.

Tony: It times out when trying to ping the router. Can't ping web sites. Network connection shows it is connected to Cooleyfamily and the strength is very good.

Arie: I'll download the manual and see what I can find. With the exception of security I just took the defaults when I hooked it up.

Don't know if this has anything to do with it but, in the Network and Sharing Center it shows it is connected to Cooleyfamily but on the diagram at the top it shows it is an "unidentified network ".

Lease expiration date changed to one week.

    1. be sure to set the connection type to "Home" and not "Public ".

    2. remove any wifi security and try connecting.

It won't let me change the connection type to home. When I changed it the first time it appeared to accept the change but later it showed it was public. When i changed it again it said it couldn't change it but I could change it later in the Network and Sharing center.

disabled security on the router - it connected just fine.

    Internet available now?
Check Windows Firewall settings for the wifi connection too.

Well, i guess the problem is at the router. I turned off Windows Firewall, just to see if it was having any effect and it still will not connect to the internet with router security on but it will with security off.

Jim (owner) said it connected fine at his house so I may just finish it up take it to his house to see if it connects. My daughter hasn't been over with her laptop in a few days so I have nothing else wireless to test my router with.

I'm so confused. I'll try anything you can suggest......

Reset the router. Look in the manual & it'll say how to perform a factory reset.

Actually, it has a menu option "Restore Factory Defaults ". I'll give that a try before I go to bed.

I reset the router to factory - no change
I turned off the router's firewall - no change
I changed the channel from auto to 7 - and nothing could get out.

So, I restored to my backup configuration. While it was restoring there were many more options showing on the menu to the left, such as "utilities ", "mac address filtering" - at least twice a many as I see normally. But then it went back to the normal view I see.

Going to take a few minutes to read the entire manual.

Use channel 1 or 11. These two channels have the least overlap from other channels and the least interference from other wifi signals (microwaves, garage door openers, baby monitors, etc).

    Hi,
I have solved similar issue with DLink router. Do not turn off Windows firewall, wireless router should work just fine with firewall ON. You have not mentioned the Belkin Model number, because some of the routers need firmware update.

As admin mentioned you can reset your router and Re-configure it. You can refer this Belkin wireless router setup

Well, I messed around with different settings for a while longer and the owner called about its status. I took it back to him and it connected immediately. Go figure. I don't know what the problem was and wish I still had the laptop to try to find the gremlin.

Just to close it out I will mark this resolved......I wish it were. I hate loose ends.
