I have an unknown device installing itself on my USB root hub #2. A Norton tech went through it online and used a power eraser and said it is not something malevolent. He said to call the vendor, I thought I'd start here first. It started not quite a week ago. FWIW the only other information I have on it is

    One unused port

One unknown device=Port_#0002.Hub_#0003 No drivers for this. Rank of installed driver is 0DFF0000

I uninstall it and it reinstalls itself again after a while.

"Identify unknown devices not recognized by Windows in your system especially after you reinstall your system and cannot figure out what all those yellow question mark labeled devices really are."

    Unknown Device Identifier

I tried it but it didn't find it. I uninstalled the unknown device as well. I booted up the Unknown Device Identifier again one the mystery device re-installed and it still didn't see it.

Today I had something malfunction on a USB hub. Having tried to fix itself it Microsoft said:

Another message said my software is up to date. I'll try the software I downloaded again.

    Any result/difference? Any update?

You might need the computer manufacturer's version of the USB controller drivers (I seem to have a bad memory about usbstor.inf). You haven't told us or put the system details in your profile, so we can't (possibly) help you find the USB drivers/driver updates. They are usually bundled with the chipset drivers.

A Norton tech?? Norton only make software, they might use "virtual drivers ", but I can't see how they could help with a USB port/hub problem.

It seems to be on a USB port. Disconnect all your USB devices, reconnect them one at a time and isolate what device is causing the problem.

At work we often get computers that have had USB connectors forced in the wrong way round and the port is subsequently broken. Then the motherboard can start acting strangely. Just check that somebody hasn't broken a USB port.

Thanks for the advice. However I can't find anything wrong with the drivers I have installed. I've reinstalled the few that I plug into my USB ports. Now I'm getting a blue screen message so I think I'm going to have to take it to someone to look at it.

I had Norton look at it as I suspected something malevolent might be going on.

I've run it without anything plugged into the USB ports for a couple days and it keeps re-installing regardless. Again though, thanks for the suggestions.

If you need to ask questions about your system, you should to put the details in your WindowsBBS profile.
I would update the chipset drivers.

There are suggestions to replace the usbstor driver files. I think that is what I needed to do when I had that problem.

If you don't think you will need to continue the thread, please mark it Resolved.
