Clicked shut down at the end of the session, screen showed shutting down message, blanked out as usual, but the CPU is still running with fan going and power light on. Had to hold down power button to shut it off that way. Only had this problem after a colleague checked my emails when I was away for a couple of days....

    Help?

Hi toothie, Welcome to WindowsBBS :D

Try reverting to a restore point from before you were away for a couple of days, your friend may have done a little more than check your emails.

Additionally, Please enter your System Details. It helps us in answering your questions!

Thanks wildfire. Have done system restore this morning, no help. This computer has been built by an IT company, Intel Core i5 CPU 650@3.2Ghz, 4Gb RAM. That's all I know, sorry I'm such a noob. :(

toothie, I'm thinking a driver issue. Before I can help you further you really need to follow these instructions from my previous post, without this information I cannot help.

It's gone 2am here and I'm going offline but I'll look back in in the morning.

Have filled in the blanks as best as I could. Probably need to open up the box to see what's inside re: harddrives. Have spoken to my colleague briefly if she had noticed anything odd. From her description, the CPU shut itself down 2-3 secs after the power button was pressed. After 3 times of that process it finally booted up properly without a glitch... only that the CPU won't shut down now.

OK, downloading and installing the appropriate drivers for windows 7 32bit from gigabyte shouldn't do any harm but with your description I'm now wondering if it's hardware.

Do you see any ?'s or !'s in device manager?

BTW, SIW is able to tell you the HD make and models without opening up the case.

I had the exact same thing happening to me some weeks ago, and I am raking my brain out (whats left of it) trying to remember exactly what it was.
I am almost sure that it was a program of some sort that I installed that caused Windows to shut down, but the lights on the front of the case stayed on until I shut them manually off with the power button.
Deleting the program returned the machine to normal shut off again.
And that is with Win 7 Ultimate 32 bit.
But I am not 100% sure.
I would therefore suggest to check if any new app or program has been installed.
wildfires suggestion to do a restore as you did would normally have reverted you to a state before, but it did not fix the issue.
A couple of gasses of good red wine might refresh my memory.

I'd mail a bottle out Hawk, but it's a little too far :)

    @toothie,

One reoccurring issue I've seen by googling is anti virus software causing this issue. I'm not saying this is the case for you but what AV are you using and when was the last time you updated (posting the version number's probably best)

Another thing you should do is run this command: powercfg /energy from an elevated command prompt.

When finished, copy C:\Windows\System32\energy-report.html to the desktop & open it with IE.

Check out anything in the Errors section.
