I seem to be getting crashes that happen randomly and as far as I can tell nothing is happening in the error logs.
It's like a BSOD without the bluescreen, it will just freeze and become unresponsive.

    Thanks in advance.

Please fill out your system details so as to let us know the problem. Please answer these questions :-
    1. What exactly happens when the computer freezes ?
    2. You said it becomes unresponsive, you mean the display or the whole operating system ?
    3. Can you remember since when is it happening ? Did to install/uninstall anything prior to the development of this symptom ?

Here is your problem mate, i had a hunch that the issue was with the nVidia thing. I suffered the same fate with my laptop. I seriously believe that you too are heading towards the same VGA chip failure thing. Becoz AMD and nVidia, this often fails as the VGA chip solders begin to crack under heat as the heat sink in the motherboards of AMD make do not have an adequate setting and this, over time, causes the same burnout issue.
I suggest you immediately take it to your hardware expert.

    P.S.

    It confirmed my fear.

Yes. If your screen freezes suddenly and nothing happens however hard you may try and you have to restart the computer manually and you have and AMD chipset with nVidia, you are heading to a situation where this will happen :-
    1. The freezes will become more and more frequent.
    2. Finally the chip will fail, leaving the system in a vegetative state. whenever you would switch it on, all the indicator LEDs will power up but there would be no booting, just a black screen.
    3. You will have to reball the graphics card (chipset reballing).
    :(:(

Could this be why I lag while trying to play Shift2? or is it because my graphics card is inadiquate?
I was thinking of upgrading, do you have any recommendations?

Your graphics card is not the problem. The pairing is the problem. Correct me if I say,
YOUR SYSTEM SUDDENLY FREEZES WHILE PLAYING OR DOING SOMETHING. THE SCREEN DOES NOTHING AND THE MOUSE CURSOR WON'T MOVE. NO BUTTONS WORK AND YOU RESTART IT MANUALLY AND EVERYTHING SEEMS FINE ONCE AGAIN.
