spiderpug, I did read all of your post but the above concerns me.

I'd be tempted to rule out Malware from our expert before continuing.

Please follow these instructions as best you can and post in the Malware and Virus Removal forum.

Hi, I have posted all the logs in the malware and virus forum. I'd be very suprised if there was anything on here. The post is submitted under the same title 'windows not closing down'. Cheers

spiderpug, Fairly obvious but when you reinstalled windows you did install the chipset drivers for your board didn't you?

Did you use the installation/recovery disks that came with your laptop? If so chances are the drivers are installed.

I'm outta ideas other than trial and error spiderpug.

You could try disabling any startup programs one at a time to see if you can find the culprit.

Yes, I installed drivers from Acers website. The computer has been closing down much more often than it was before you had helped me. So I am guessing the issue is resolved for now, although I have had 1 shutdown where the computer hadn't turned of over a period of about 2 weeks. Your help has been great and I hope this lasts. It must have been that driver that wasn't updated.
Whats some tips if it starts happening again, do I check in the control panel for errors shutting down?

    Cheers,
    James

That's where I would start James, using system restore if the problem is fairly recent could also be effective.

    spiderpug ...

I was also having a problem with Win7 taking forever to shutdown (or not shutting down at all), but found this solution after an online search. I created a Start menu shortcut (it could also be placed on the Desktop) with this string in the target window of the shortcut's Properties:
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\shutdown.exe -s -f -t 0
The 0 at the end of the string means an immediate shutdown (it actually takes several seconds), but any other number means a delay of that many seconds.

This may not solve your problem, but it works for me.

Could also cause loss of data Jim, use at your own risk.

Simply put, instead of asking programs to save data/show dialogs to save files etc you're telling them stop what you're doing and go away.

    Not always the best choice.

Perhaps so but, in my experience, any open program with unsaved data does open a save dialog. Besides, I don't just shutdown willy-nilly ... I always make sure that anything I've been working on is saved, and that all programs are closed before shutting down.

For anyone trying to shutdown with programs open, it would be better to set the time delay to some number other than 0.

My suggested fix was for a computer that refuses to shut down, other than by the brute force power button approach.

Run this command: powercfg /energy from an elevated command prompt.

When finished, copy C:\Windows\System32\energy-report.html to the desktop & open it with IE.

Check out anything in the Errors section.

    Hi,
I am not sure how to do that last part. Although The problem seems to be fixed now. I don't have any problems anymore with it shutting down, ever since i updated the sound card
