My computer with Win XP Pro was working and booting on Friday. Since Sunday it will only boot to the Windows Logo then hangs up there. It will not boot in safe mode and will not boot on the last known good configuration either.

This computer has a 2GB AMD dual core processor and three hard drives: a 160 GB and a 250 GB internally and a 1TB drive externally. It has been updated to SP3, has not had any new hardware or software installed unless it was an automatic Microsoft update set to occur in the middle of the night. There have been thunder storms lately and the computer may have shut down suddenly.

Other problems: The computer has been slow showing text after typing in some cases lately, and explorer has been experiencing trouble and becoming unresponsive when addressing Kingston flash drive or Iomega external hard drive.

Can anyone shed any light on this problelm or suggest how to proceed to correct this problem. Thank you in advance.

    Frank

The phrase that caught my eye was this ....
although you would have been aware of this? Power surges can cause irreparable damage to the circuitry of the computer.

Unfortunately you did not complete your System Details by following this guide so all we know is that you are running 32 bit XP. We have no idea if this is an OEM computer (Dell, HP, etc) or a home built and the type of XP install CD used - Retail, OEM, etc.

The best i can suggest as a first step is to check out the hard drive on which the OS is installed using the drive manufacturer's disk diagnostic software - DOS version from a boot CD .....

    Disk Diagnostic Software ....

    Hitachi/IBM

    Samsung

    Seagate, Maxtor, Quantum

    Western Digital

    Hi Peter C,

Thanks for your response. Upon further investigation I have determined that the hard drive is toast.

    Regards,
    Frank
