The past several weeks my laptop has either frozen or shut down at start-up. Normally after a forced shutdown or self re-start it works fine (except when I want to do something that involves flash- which pushes the CPU up & shuts it down if I'm not quick enough to leave the site).
This morning it self shut down twice before finally staying on - whatever is upsetting it seems to be getting worse.
I've had task manager up & it seems to do it while loading the services.
I've done virus & malware scans, run cc cleaner, checked to see if defrag is necessary & made sure all drivers are up to date. I'm running Windows 7 Ultimate (fresh install on what was Vista Home) on a 3 year old Toshiba Satellite A200.
I don't want to leave it on 24/7 but am worried it won't start again!
Any help getting this sorted out would be much appreciated - Thanks in advance

Heat could be a problem. See if you can clean the heat sink.

Do you have your Laptop sitting on a cooler stand, sounds a bit like overheating like rsinfo has pointed out.

It's not sitting on a cooler stand, but I do have it sitting about an 1 & 1/2" off the desk. The problem is at start-up when it has been off for over 12 hours. Watching the task manager it seems to be fine until it starts loading the services over 39. It's been running now for almost 12 hours with no shut off. Seems fine once it gets going (unless I go to something requiring flash player). I have cleaned the fan but not comfortable messing about with anything else inside.
Thank you both for your replies

Try trimming your startups & services. Some program could be hanging the machine.

I would start by running this command: powercfg /energy from an elevated command prompt.

When finished, copy C:\Windows\System32\energy-report.html to the desktop & open it with IE.

Check out anything in the Errors section.

Next you'll have to check your Even Viewer for errors that coincide with your problem.

I suggest you first uninstall Chrome & see how your system functions without it.

If you still have problems, you'll need to check Window Event Viewer & see if there are any errors listed that can be 'tied' to your problems (i.e. look at the "Logged" time).

Thanks - Did that & found a certificate that had expired or was about to, from something I'd already uninstalled - deleted it
Also a PnP driver that wasn't loading, that error had been going on since before my freezing problem - still working on that one
Something is still both at start up & random other times causing a massive surge in CPU & shutting the laptop off though
