I have just encountered an "issue" in which any attempt to open a program
results in a pop-up window that offers me menu of selections to "open" the
program, regardless of what the program is. At the top of the menu list
is a "suggested" offerring and that is uTORRENT. The Win/XP system has been rendered useless. Am I seeing a virus/malware -or- ??

Is this on the computer you are using right now?

BTW uTorrent is not malware in itself but is a major carrier of the diseases, if you do use it I'd advise you stop.

Negative, different desktop system. I inherited it about a year ago. Didn't know
uTorrent was even on it. The system boots to the desktop and then I'm unable
    to open ANY program.

In which yes I'd be tempted to rule out Malware from our expert before continuing.

Please follow these instructions as best you can and post in the Malware and Virus Removal forum.

Try to run the requested software for the logs in safe mode.

I followed the instructions and was unable to make sense of the suggested web site. I, however, edited the registry per the instructions and it appeared that all values were correct. I did click "OK" tho and the
associations were restored. I'm baffled....but HEY it works now!
