Hi - This problem just started yesterday - I copied about 200 GB of files off my 300 GB drive (internal to external), which worked fine, then a few hours later trying to copy or move files off the same drive in XP (64-bit) gave me an absurd estimate (like 200 minutes for something that should have taken 10), and after a minute or so, the mouse would freeze and both the keyboard and mouse would be unresponsive and I had to reboot.

Tried defragging the drive, it could be analyzed, then the comp froze during the defrag process.

Tried running checkdisc on bootup on the drive, froze again as far as I could tell.

Just now I tried copying files between 2 other drives (my 4 TB external drive and my 64 GB drive that has my OS and programs), the estimate was normal, but then everything froze up after a minute again.

Any advice/ideas?? This has never happened before and right now I can't even make a backup of my work files.

    Thanks very much, Dave

Thanks, I'll try running diagnostics and have added my system specs.

Is HD1 a solid state drive? As far as I know corsair don't produce magnetic drives.

EDIT: Never mind, google is my friend ;)

Curious as to why you think a 64GB drive is 300GB though

Yes, the Corsair drive is a 64 GB SSD.

Fair enough, as it's not possible to copy 200GB from a 64GB drive I can only assume you were copying from your WD drive.

Test that and post details of the external drive please.

Yes I was copying from 300 GB HD, which is Western Digital. I used their diagnostics to run a quick test which passed, planning to run the extended test also but that's supposed to take about 2 days.

My external drive is a 4 TB Lacie (LaCie 2big Quadra 4TB External Hard Drive 301432U).

    Thanks

Two days? even for an extended test that sounds extremely excessive. The details you give for your external drive suggest the casing not the drive manufacturer. Can you dig a little deeper (perhaps using SIW - System Information for Windows
) to determine the manufacturer of the actual drive?

I installed SIW and checked it out, but unfortunately wasn't able to find any additional info regarding the actual manufacturer of the HDDs inside the Lacie enclosure.

Re: 2 days for the extended test, I assume this is just because of whatever problem I'm having with the drive(s). Even a virus scan locked everything up.

    Thanks

I ran the extended test on the WD HDD which passed. Because the problem now seems to associated with copying more than maybe 20 MB of files from any drive, I'm thinking it may be something with the motherboard?

I would suspect a corrupted Windows Explorer, can you run Safe Mode trouble free.

Well, an SSD drive on Windows XP isn't the best idea... XP is just to **** old & doesn't support TRIM.

I would suspect you are running out of space on your "C" drive which could possibly be the problem with copying your files from one drive to the other.

Try moving your TEMP file to another drive...

    • Cleare a new TEMP folder on one of your other (internal) hard drives
    • Right-click My Computer in your Start menu and select Properties
    • Select the Advanced tab
    • Click the button Environment Variables
    • Click the Edit button on both the TEMP and TMP variables and point them to the new folder

I'll try safe mode. Re: free space, I had about 50 GB free when I started copying files. I have read about TRIM, though what I read indicated it's not a very significant issue (i.e., not having support for it). I was considering ghosting my drive and formatting the SSD occasionally, though my current XP install is only about 6 months old.

    Thanks guys
