    Hi,

I'm using an old Dell Inspiron 600m. I love Firefox and Chrome but the lowest RAM usage I can possibly get after many many tweaks is about 150MB, which is unacceptable on a 512MB RAM system.

I've thought about grabbing a copy of Firefox 2.x, is there anything else that would use less RAM? I really need whatever uses the least.

    Thanks :)

    Lynx

Seriously how low do want to go? Currently on my system FF is using 100MB with 2 tabs open. There's no point in keeping memory free if you're not using it.

Then go with lynx or you could drum up a basic browser using batch files and ftp ;)

Sduibek, these browsers use resources because they provide services, do you want video/music/graphics/security or do you want a plain text only browser?

At the very least what HTML standard would you like this browser to support?

Well these are the sites I use most often--

    Gmail.com
    Meetup.com
    BECU.org
    americanexpress.com
    capitalone.com
    discovercard.com

I am pretty sure browsers didn't use to require this much resources so I guess I just don't understand why it takes double or triple the memory to display the same basic web page.

Not what I asked for ;)

Seriously, unless you have a problem just stick with what you're using. Windows XP is quite good at managing what resources are available.

Then perhaps your problems are elsewhere not with the browser, what other software are you running?

.5 Gig with XP and browser should be plenty but if you're running other software and/or infected with malware I can see there being a problem.

EDIT: Just for the record I installed and used lynx for a short while (it takes you back a bit :)), 1.8Mb a short enough footprint for you? :D

How about more RAM ? I am sure your system would appreciate that.

I agree with rsifo.....but sometimes spending more money isn't an option. So, you may want to try this one from Sourceforge.net.
