    Hi,

    I'm currently running my pc in safe-mode with networking because the normal mode wont start. When I do turn it on it goes normally until I should see icons and the wallpaper appear but all there is is.. well black and the mouse pointer. I'm considering using the restore point but I never set it up so I'm not sure what to do...

    Many thanks for your help in advance.

    JP

    What OS are you running ? If you have no restore points before the incident that won't work . If you have the OS disk you can run a recovery using that . what were you doing before the lock out occured / did you install any software or download anything before it would not boot normally ?

    I'm running Vista Basic ad sadly my CD is long gone. Is it possible that the tech who installed my windows would have made a restore point? If so, how do I know? Otherwise.... any other ideas on fixing this without formatting? (Chinese techs seem to think it's the only way... but they also format on simple malware issues so I don't feel I can trust them...)

    **Edit**

    Internet crashed and I shut down my PC. I'm running through my friends PC for now. Before the lock I was having problems with my PC. I would turn it on and it would freeze up inside of 5-10 minutes and then nothing would work. I tried running Malware bytes but everything froze anyways so I ran malware bytes throughmode safe , thats when normal mode completely stopped turning on.

    Well, there's several things you can do. The first is to check your Event Viewer to see what error messages are reported around the time that you get the Local Session Manager message.

    To do this, go to Start and type in "eventvwr.msc" (without the quotes) and press Enter
    Click on the Windows logs entry in the left hand pane, then on the System log that's just below it.
    Scroll down by time until you get to the time around when the error occurred - then note any error messages around then.
    Then do the same thing for the Application log.

    Post the results back here and we'll move on from there.

    Alright, so I'm looking at the logs now and I'm seeing errors going back months at a time, I'll start with the most recent ones (today) going back to the day windows blacked out, then I'll post maybe a months worth of errors before the blackout. Most of them have the same error code so I'm assuming it's all related.

    -Event ID 10005: DCOM got error "1084" attempting to start the service WSearch with arguments " " in order to run the server:
    {9E175B6D-F52A-11D8-B9A5-505054503030}

    -Event ID 7026: The following boot-start or system-start driver(s) failed to load:
    AvgLdx86
    AvgMfx86
    eeCtrl
    Protector
    ProtectorA
    spldr
    Wanarpv6

    -Event ID 7001: The Computer Browser service depends on the Server service which failed to start because of the following error:
    The dependency service or group failed to start.

    -Event ID 7043: The AVG Free WatchDog service did not shut down properly after receiving a preshutdown control.

    -Event 7043: The Group Policy Client service did not shut down properly after receiving a preshutdown control.

    -Event 7000: The Parallel port driver service failed to start due to the following error:
    The service cannot be started, either because it is disabled or because it has no enabled devices associated with it.

    -Event 6008: The previous system shutdown at 19:53:30 on 28/04/2011 was unexpected.

    -Event 41: *Critical* The last sleep transition was unsuccessful. This error could be caused if the system stopped responding, failed, or lost power during the sleep transition.

    -Event 7000: The Parallel port driver service failed to start due to the following error:
    The service cannot be started, either because it is disabled or because it has no enabled devices associated with it.

    Event 7043: The AVG Free WatchDog service did not shut down properly after receiving a preshutdown control.

    Event 7043: The Group Policy Client service did not shut down properly after receiving a preshutdown control.

    Event 6008: The previous system shutdown at 18:51:30 on 28/04/2011 was unexpected.

    ------------------ There are just so many and they repeat themselves so much that I'm not sure what I'm looking for... anything to help me filter out? Just going back a week could take me hours... as for the applications one, apart from MSN and Itunes errors, I only got this one that repeats itself and really stands out:

    The COM+ Event System detected a bad return code during its internal processing. HRESULT was 8007043c from line 45 of d:\longhorn\com\complus\src\events\tier1\eventsystemobj.cpp. Please contact Microsoft Product Support Services to report this error.

    Looks like the COM + application has become corrupt and is causing your boot issue because of the repeated error codes

    if the COM+ Catalog have become corrupt, then it can be re-built with the following steps:

    1. Reboot and start in Safemode
    2. Open a command prompt (cmd.exe) and execute the following commands:
    * ren %windir%\System32\Clbcatq.dll Clbcatq.dll.bak
    * del %windir%\Registration\*.* /s
    3. Start the registry editor and delete the following registry key:

    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE \SOFTWARE \Microsoft \COM3]

    4. Reboot and start in Normal mode.
    5. Open a command prompt (cmd.exe) and execute this command:

    rmdir /s %windir%\Registration

    6. Open the Control Panel and double click Add/Remove Programs
    7. Select Add/Remove Components and click Next and it will reinstall COM+
    8. Re-apply the necessary service packs and updates for COM+.

    I recieved this error message: This file does not have a program associated with it for performing this action. Create an association in the Set Association in the control panel.

    So I'm guessing... head straight for malware or...?
