I am transferring files from one hard drive on one laptop to another hard drive on another laptop using a ethernet cable. I set the hard drive to share and the other computer sees it but once I try to click on the folder it comes up with an error saying I do not have access and contact the administrator. I set sharing password protection off on both home and public policies. How do I set the privileges so I can access the files?

Both laptops identify this network as unidentified , public, and both have static ips set up. One laptop has trend micro security which was a trial version and seems to be disabled and the other has avg on it. I have put them both in safe mode but that still gave me the error. The laptop where the files are located is running win 7 pro and the laptop I want to transfer to is running win 7 home premium

If you are connecting directly laptop to laptop using an ethernet cable, you will need a crossover cable to do the transferring. Otherwise, use a hub, switch, or router and you won't need the crossover.

Have both computers "joined" the 'unidentified - pulbic' group? I personally would suggest you create a "home group" for both to join and set up file sharing there [orb > type "homegroup" in the search box > select homegroup > create if one isn't already created.]

If both computers are members of the group there shouldn't be any permissions to set after sharing is established.

From what i have been reading on creating a homegroup, you need to change the network type to home. I cannot change this connection as home. Connection type seems to be read only and stays as public. There seems to be no way to change it.

I am unsure what the problem may be. You may just try Windows Easy File Transfer and see if that offers any help. In the meantime maybe someone with more expertise will stop in to provide a solution.
