I am trying to copy some data files from my XP SP3 computer to my WIndows 7 64-bit laptop.
Trying over my network did not work so I have used a USB drive to transfer but with no better results. Small files are OK but a folder of files or any other single files cause Explorer to freeze.
One reference I have found mentioned using "shexview" where you could disable shells and re-enable them one by one. I get a list of 179 items!! Are there any guidelines to what might be worth trying first?
It will be a long job because stopping Explorer takes forever to work.

Disable all the non MS shell extensions and test. Then re-enable one by one testing in between each. However ....

If disabling all non MS shell extensions makes no difference it is reasonable to assume that they are not the cause of your problems.

Thank you for that - it made sense when I thought about it. There were few items that were not MS or to do with other parts of my system.
Sadly it did not fix the problem however.
Explorer continues to misbehave, will copy the odd file and then seize up and sometimes freezes the whole system and then will not log off

My sincere thanks for replies - Thanks Pete for the Google reference - somehow missed those in my search. I followed a good deal of the advice in those but got bogged down in the checks in Safe Mode - I am new to Windows 7.
I needed the laptop urgently so after a thorough diagnostic check, full virus check etc I finally resorted to a Computer Services - having had a personal computer since 1982 and never requring such services it is a blow to the ego!! Too old???

Tony, I have squirreled your info away for when I replace my desktop later in the year.

I will report back on what their verdict was on the problem for info for others.

Werll, my computer is back from the 'hospital' and working so far.
My ego is boosted a little - computer expert does not know really what the problem was - muttered something about suspecting video drivers!!
    Who knows???

I guess there's always satisfaction to be had when the 'experts' don't know what the source of the problem was, but at least it's fixed :)

    Thanks for the update .....
