I have a $150 Canon printer/scanner/fax that comes with a third-party scanner program that puts out only TIFF files. If you want to save the files as PDF files, you need to pay $500 to upgrade the program. That makes no sense.

Are there any good, free scan-to-pdf-file programs out there? I know there are in Linux land, but I don't live there.

There's a few free PDF printer drivers eg Bullzip PDF Printer out there if that helps (ie you print the TIFF to a PDF file).

Open Office can also export to PDF.

Plenty of solutions out there it just depends on what your needs are.

My Canon Pixma MP160 came with a program "MP Navigator" which works great. I scan a lot of documents and save them directly as PDFs.

Thanks for the suggestions. It looks like there is no freeware for Windows that does scanning to PDF. That's a shame.

I bought my Canon MF4370dn printer a year and a half ago because it said that it does network scanning. Turns out that you need a third-party product to do the network scanning.

Canon bundled a third-party product with my printer that does the network scanning. Turns out that the product only puts out huge TIFF files. To put out PDF files, you need to upgrade. That costs $499.

I can work with the TIFF files. It's just a pain to do so.

I called up Canon to find all this out, and their suggestion was to buy a new printer. My printer is already obsolete, they said. Our newer printers come bundled with network scanning capability, they said.

I've always liked Canon. They have a call center in Virginia, with usually helpful people. But after this experience, I'm not very happy with Canon at all.

There are some freeware scan to pdf programs available but some of the reviews I read of the - three- I looked at indicate the resultant files are huge.

That printer has a built in print server. It can be connected dirtectly to a router and on each pc it can be installed as a printer using a standard TCP/IP printer port. If you access the printer menu there should be an option to print the settings and find out the printer's UIP address.

Enter that address into a Web browser to access the print server. Most print servers let you scan right from the Web interface and they create PDFs when scanning text documents. The PDF conversion software is built into the print server.
