tonight i went to burn a cd, and found that the PC no longer see's either the CD / DVD read/write drive or the DVD/BLUE RAY read only drive. I have looked at the device manager, and it shows the drives there, but in properties on each drive says the drivers could not load, error 39. I have tried to upgrade drivers, and the system says they the best drivers are currently loaded. The drives will open and close, but thats all they will do. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

    many thanks.

Would help to know your OS .....

We encourage all members to complete their System Specifications which help us to help you :)

Regardless try one of these two suggestions .....

Uninstall the Optical drives through Device Manager - reboot to allow Windows to reinstall & test

Uninstal optical drives through Device Manager - do not reboot, instead go to Action > Scan for Hardware Changes and test. (XP only AFAIK)

See also the answer here .....

    PeteC,
I have uninstalled the drives, rebooted, and still the same. I have also added system specs as you said. I have also tried running troubleshoot in device manager on each drive, it runs, but does not give any answer's. I have tried Mr Fixit, but keep getting an error that the program did not download correctly. I get the feeling that some thing does not want me to use the optical drives.

Thinking back, do you remember instaling any new software since the drives were known to be working?

BTW - Not wishing to be over pedantic, but your hard drive is 1 Tb - not 1 Gb :)

    Pete,
You got me there, and i had only consumed 3 cans of coke. I think i need to cut down on the sugar intake. I have not installed any new software for a few weeks, but i do have 3 young children and a wife that use it when i'm at work. I often come home to find half the desktop icons missing, little finger problems abound in this house.I have thought about setting mouse traps on the keyboard b4 i leave for work, but i am sure that wouldn't stop them.

Is this the Fix It that you tried? Did you also try the manual method 'Let me fix it myself' when the auto fix failed?

Your CD drive or DVD drive is missing or is not recognized by Windows or other programs

    Another possible solution .....

Physically disconnect both the drives and reboot.

Shut down and reconnect the drives. Reboot

BTW check the ribbon cable connection to the motherboard - I assume the drives are on the same data cable, unless they are SATA drives?

Pete, yes that was the fix that i tried, and i tried it again , with the same result, there was a problem with the download. I tried the shutdowm, disconnect drives ( sata ) reboot, shutdown, reconnect and reboot, still no change. I then tried the manual method, delete the upper and lower filters, and yahoo, it's a goer. Both drives are now seen by the system , and are working fine. Many thanks for your help, greatly appreciated. I will mark this thread resolved. Again, many thanks for your help.
