I cannot access any web site that pertains to official Microsoft sites, ie: www.support.microsot.com, Microsoft Update, Windows Update, Microsoft Office sites, etc. I receive an IE error titled "Internet Explorer cannot display the webpage. "

I've had this issue for some time, just now got to where it is more of a pain where there shouldn't be a pain and doing something about the issue. I first noticed the problem after completing a major update session, which included SP3 on my HP laptop running XP. Currently running IE7 (cannot update IE either!). Sheesh!

    Any help/suggestions will be appreciated...

Please contact me if more info is needed.

I have checked wired and wireless network connections: cannot access ftp.microsoft.com, http or https microsoft anything. As long as the web page I'm seeking is NOT an official Microsoft page, I can access the site. Enabled and disabled firewalls to no avail.

Check the following registry (HKCU and HKLM)

    Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings\ZoneMap\Domains

    Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings\P3P\History

    Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings\ZoneMap\EscDomains

Hi BarryBat, Welcome to Windowsbbs! :)

Since you can't access any microsoft websites take a look at this link on another computer and follow the steps on the machine that is experiencing the connection problem, You receive an error message in Internet Explorer: "Internet Explorer cannot display the webpage ".

If that link doesn't resolve your problem what happens when you try a different web browser to access the microsoft website? Have you tried booting into Safe Mode with Networking and seeing if you can connect? Regarding your Internet Explorer problem, when you attempt (I assume) to install IE8 do you receive an error message?

The fact that you can't access any microsoft websites or install IE8 leads me to believe that you could have a possible malware infection on your computer which is preventing your computer from accessing any microsoft websites.

If that is the case then please read this and create a new thread in the Malware and Virus Removal Forum.

This will make sure that your computer doesn't have any malware infections that are causing your connection problem.

There's a NASTY virus/malware bug out there that is causing this. I've seen this first hand! You can not navigate to any Microsoft official website, nor can you run Windows Update (automatically or manually). This particular bug is not seen by older versions of AV/malware/adware programs. Try downloading and running the latest MalwareBytes and/or AdAware. One of these seems to have fixed the problem for me.
