I recently received a Windows update, like many I have received before, and immediately encountered a problem. When I try to open any folder from the "My Documents" or "My Pictures" folder on my desktop, including "My Computer ", I get the following error message:

"This file does not have a program associated with it for performing this action. Please install a program or, if one is already installed, create an association in the Default Programs control panel. "

Needles to say, the suggested solution was a dead end that accomplished nothing. I tried doing a system restore but was told that it failed due a "serious error ". I tried an earlier restore point with the same result.

I can get to the files in the problem folders by going through the application.

First thing to try is System Restore back before the update and let us know what happens.

Hi caribsailor. Take a look here, Windows XP File Association Fixes. Run the .exe file association fix, the directory association fix as well the .link(shortcut) file association fix.

After thats done reboot the computer for the changes to take effect.

@Mark, the original poster tried running System Restore and that didn't work properly.

Also please enter your System Details. It helps us in answering your questions.

Note: A common error is to forget to show your System Details in your profile:

Make sure to do the above when entering your System Details, thanks.

You need to fill out your System Specs. I like many other don't always look as to what area people are posting in.
Go to User CP near the top left and do the system specs.

As far my knowledge if you try safe mode booting and after that from safe mode to control panel their you can see many updates uninstall all option. or from services.msc stop that particular patch work. may be it will resolve your problem
