    Please Help-
I have been cleaning up an older HP runing win XP sp2.

I have Been making progress until I installed SP3

It wont boot into windows only into safe mode

no virus, no spyware, just a windows SP3 issue.

1st time I uninstalled it ok and did some Microsoft fixes and tried to install it again.

2nd time I installed it I could not uninstall it and had use system restore.
that caused me to do a lot of the work all over again

I made some more fixes and tried it a 3rd time big mistake

same problem as before, will only boot into safe mode.

I can not uninstall it. I was only able to remove the security patch.

when I do uninstall It says cant find the file, sp3 not uninstalled.

I really do not want to restore again, any ideas?
    Thanks
    Bruce

Ok, sounds like there are some problems here but you have not explained why you kept installing and uninstalling SP3 what was going wrong, that alone should not have caused any problems.

You may be able to clean up this installation by running a repair install but first you will need to slipstream your copy of XP with SP3.

My guess is an infected system. SP2 is vulnerable beyond belief.

Read this post, then post the requested log(s) in the Malware and Virus Removal forum.

After a ton of work I restored my system. The problem was that Compaq with the AMD processor was not compatible with the windows SP3 update. It would keep blocking me from booting up in Windows.

After restoring my system there was an HP pop up update screen that said they made a fix for the AMD problem.
I did not trust it and went directly to the HP site, and downloaded a patch they say to run before running the SP3 update.
I am still scared to do it again so I am waiting for some feedback from a few techies.

    any thoughts here are welcome.
    Thanks

Follow Arie's advice. If your computer is declared clean at least you have ruled out any Maleware or Viruses as the culprit.

I have downloaded the MS patch that clearly states it will fix the AMD issue.
But I will wait a few days before I try it if I do at all.
    Thanks

SP3 fixed a bunch of venerabilities. Don't put it on and it is like leaving the front door of you house wide open with robbers at your next door neighbors and they have to go past your house to leave. Just sayin...

You do need to apply the AMD patch on a HP/Compaq computer running that processor before installing SP3. HP in their infinite wisdom included both Intel and AMD drivers in their factory installations. This led to the problem with SP3.
