    [FONT= "Verdana"]Hi all,

I can't access the internet at all via my desktop, as I keep getting the above message. I have been in contact with my service provider, and they have assured me my connection is fine. Also, Firefox won't connect either.

Outlook Express is working fine, and will receive emails perfectly.

I believe the problem arose after visiting a site (reported safe by WOT) which opened a small window (which I immediately closed) then opened a Java update (I think) window. I also received a Winpatrol notification about a new startup program, which I didn't allow.

Also, I'm not sure if it's relevant but I am also getting a Windows update error (KB2467659) each time my desktop updates.

This could be a possible infection, however not being able to post logs via my desktop, I thought I'd try here first.

Any help would be much appreciated.

Sounds like you may have an unwanted add on. Disable addons by following this short instruction and then try to run IE8.

    •Go to Start > Run
•Type iexplore -extoff (use exton to turn addons back on)
    •Press Enter

    Post back with the result.

Please also advise you OS and SP level.

[FONT= "Verdana"]I followed your instructions, however there is no change.

Shortly after trying your suggestion, I got a New program alert from Winpatrol. It says it has detected a new Internet Explorer ActiveX Component has been registered on your system, and someting about registering this ActiveX Control. I have taken no action as yet.

OS is XP, I'm not sure what you mean by "SP level ", but I've got ADSL if that's what you mean.

Arie, I'll post the requested logs as soon as I regain an internet connection.

    Thanks,

    -Shorerider.

SP = Service Pack - are you running XP SP1, XP SP2 or XP SP3?

The Java update to v23 is legit for XP users
Just copy them to whichever computer you are posting from now and post in the Malware & Virus Removal forum.

If possible, I'd like to sort out the internet issue before I start a thread in the Malware & Virus removal forum, as I am replying via my mobile phone.

    Check your DNS settings.

    Goto command prompt & enter ipconfig /all > ip.txt

    Post the ip.txt here.

[FONT= "Verdana"]I tried the system restore, but I could only go back to the 20th of Dec. I think this is because of the windows update error which has made a new restore point for each time I tried to install the updates. Each one of the restore points from the 20th won't work.

Also, for some reason when I check the DNS settings, the dialogue box only remains open for a split second, then closes.

    Internet is still the same.

It sounds like you are typing the command into the run box in the start menu. If so, you can't do that. Click start and type cmd in the run box. Then type the ipconfig command in the window that opens. To copy the output of the command, right click in the window and click on mark. Then highlight the output of the command and right clicking on the highlighted text will copy it to the clipboard.

Try this. Put 209.85.225.104 in the address bar of IE and press enter. It should take you to Google. If it does, it would certainly point to a DNS issue of some sort. If not, something else is more than likely wrong.

Can you get hold of another internet enabled PC, you are otherwise in a catch 22. To sort out the internet problem you need to get rid of the malware so you need another PC to be able to download and transfer various scanners to clean your PC so you can get back on line.

Although extremely likely, no one can know for sure that this problem is being caused by Malware until you are able to run the various scanners.

As Zander has pointed out above you need to run the ipconfig command from a command prompt which Zander has explained, but when you use the command given by Rsinfo it will create a file called ip on your hard drive, it will not display anything in the command box. It will be in Documents and Settings under the folder with your user name. Double left click on the file and it will open in Notepad, then copy and paste it into the next post. There may be an error in your settings which we will then be able to see and help you put right.

The only other way to cure this problem is to wipe the hard drive and do a clean install.

I have most of the tools needed already on my desktop, which I try to keep up to date. I could post the required logs here using email as I have done above. It won't be easy, but if this is acceptabl let me know.

The gateway & the DNS server entry points to the same IP [10.0.0.138]. May or may not be a problem.

Have you tried to open google by entering IP address as given by Zander in post #10 ?

Open a command prompt window & type ping google.com <enter>. Are you getting a reply ?

[FONT= "Verdana"]Yes I have tried the method as suggested in post #10 without any luck.

After typing 'pinggoogle.com' in the comand prompt window, I got "pingoogle.com is not recognised as an internal or external command, operable program or batch file "

Thanks for the help so far guys,

    -Shorerider.

Are you getting the same message ?

There is a space between ping & google. The correct command is ping google.com

    Also try pinging 209.85.225.104.

What firewall are you using? It could be a firewall issue too.

Check if you have blocked IE & FF in firewall. Had happened to me sometimes.
