    Which AV am I using?

On all systems here, I use a version of Norton AV. Three use Norton Internet Security, one uses AVG free, and the rest simply Norton AV.

Over the years, I have found Norton and Symantic to be the best, most reliable AV application around.

Have been using Kaspersky for the past couple of years but might try MS before I continue in 2011.

    anti-virus program

I've been using MSE when I heard of it, and downloaded/installed it.
Never experienced any problems and recommended it to friends.

I use Avira on both XP setups and on Vista on this, as to what I use on Win9X, I don't know, and nothing right now on Win2K - that isn't set up to use the internet.

AVG free for years till updating it became impossible.

Avast for a while but updating it also became difficult.

Microsoft Security Essentials last several months. Computer seems to be faster, too.

    I'm using nothing.

On my "big" computer, I'm using W98SE, and they don't write viruses for that anymore. Besides, I don't download anything that can contain viruses. I don't even open e-cards!

On my laptop, with W7HP, I suppose I should get something. One of these days I'll even try to connect it to the internet!

AVG on one computer [Vista :-( ] that uses only internet-based email as it appeared to interfere with Office 2003 email reception.
Avira on two computers (XP home & XP pro)--works very well; no virus issues, no performance issues (and I use OpenDNS).
From work (laptop with Win7) they gave me Symantec Endpoint Protection; no issue with it.

Used AVG for several years, but I have since replaced it with Avast. Machine runs better with the latter.

I have heard good things about MSE (Microsoft Security Essentials). I installed it on a friends laptop, but I have yet to use it myself because I like the ability to control what connects to the web, and I don't think that MSE will allow you to control outbound traffic like a firewall can.

Don't think the MSE has anything to do with a firewall. It is an AV program. It asks you during the install if you want to make sure your firewall is on. I am behind a router and use only the windows firewall and have been like that for years. Used to use Zone Alarm but quit after a couple of problems that I and others had with it. Still know a couple of people that have it installed on their PC and they don't complain.

From all the info I gathered at MS, MSE, in conjunction with Windows built-in firewall, acts as a two-way firewall. Tests were conducted at Shields Up using this combination, and it passed the stealth test.

MS MVPs said that a third party firewall is not needed, and it could possibly cause software conflicts.

Had AVG and moved to AVAST then to MSE. I like MSE. It does it's job well. I recommend it to all my clients and install it where I can.

I am currently using McAfee on both the desktop and laptop (I know, I know). I will be using that until the end of the current subscription (11/30/2011), and then I will switch to using Microsoft Security Essentials.

Norton Internet Security Suite 2011 (just updated). This is a very sharp-looking and responsive program.

Don't be too hard on yourself, I'm far from a McAfee fan (nor Symantec for that matter) but it's a better choice than a couple of others have made.
