You will need to be far more specific in what you are trying to do .....

Reload XP from a retail install CD??

Reload Windows fron a Recovery CD??

Is it XP that you are trying to install or what?

Are you booting from the install/recovery CD or are you trying to recover from a Recovery partition on your hard drive??

As I recall hitting the F3 key during the install of XP quits the installation.

We need far more detail as to what you are trying to do and how.

We encourage all members to complete their System Specifications which help us to help you :)

I have no idea if we are speaking of a laptop or desktop, but are you using a USB keyboard? - if so one of 2 things ....

Check in BIOS that Legacy USB is enabled, or ....

    try a PS/2 keyboard.

I ask the question again from post #4....
If you are not sure one way or the other - based on your posted experience - a USB keyboard has a flat rectangular plug and a PS/2 keyboard has a round plug.

It woul help if you would at least post the make and model no. of the computer, e.g Del Dimension xxx

We'll come back to the BIOS later.

For reference the manual for your IBM - in case you don't have a copy, is here ....

    http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site.wss/document.do?lndocid=MIGR-42835

As you are using a PS/2 keyboard the question of legacy USB support does not arise here.

I am still puzzled as to why F3 is important - as I mentioned earlier that quits the installation process. Do you have access to another PS/2 keyboard - yours may be faulty.

At what stage in the installation do you get 'Error loading Operating System'? Or do you get this message when you try to boot the system normally?

Was the operating system now on the computer originally installed from the CD you are now trying to use?

According to the manual there is a Recovery Partition on the hard drive accessed by striking F11 .....

If you wiped the drive the message 'error loading operating system' is to be expected as there is no operating system installed.

If you are unable to get into the BIOS you have a problem, especially as you have made changes which you cannot remember. As far as I can see from the manual the BIOS can be reset according to the procedure listed on Page 45.

Regarding the keyboard have you tried unplugging it from the computer - power OFF, and plugging it in again?

    Have you tried another keyboard?

To install XP you must boot from the installation CD and follow the screen prompts as outlined in this screen by screen article ....

    http://www.windowsxphome.windowsreinstall.com/installxpcdnewhdd/indexfullpage.htm

As you can see from the screenshots the function of F3 is to Quit the installation process so I remain puzzled by your statement ....
IBM's may have different functionality that I am not aware of.
