After updating AVG 2010 I receive the message application failed to start because MSVCR80.DLL not found. Reinstalling application may fix the problem. I did uninstall the AVG and then re-downloaded and installed again. The message now reads MSVCP80.dll not found. I should add that the AVG Antivirus seems to work just fine including updating daily?

I should add, also, that this message comes up and does prevent me from updating Google Earth so that it is more than a nuisance.

Hi jllorenz, Welcome to Windowsbbs! :)

The first thing I would do is run the SFC command to verify that all Windows files are present on the system. Click Start< Run and type sfc /scannow and hit enter.

Before running the command make sure you have a Windows XP CD that is the same Service Pack as your installed version of Windows XP. SFC may ask you to insert a Windows XP CD so make sure you use the correct disk otherwise SFC won't be able to check all of your system files.

If SFC doesn't fix the problem you could try running System Restore to restore the computer to an earlier time before you received the error message.

For more information about the above error message take a look here, Msvcp80.dll Not Found Error Resolution.

Also please enter your System Details. It helps us in answering your questions.

Note: A common error is to forget to show your System Details in your profile:

Make sure to do the above when entering your System Details, thanks.

I found this description that may be of interest and it doesn't appear to be on the Windows XP disc so sfc /scannow may not fix it. Although I may have to stand and be corrected:D

I have found several instances of it being overwritten or corrupted by installation of various programs including antivirus and a host of others.

This fix below looks promising. When you go to the site I would not be tempted to use there Registry Scanner as it may well throw up heaps of false errors. Just follow the instructions to download the free file.

One problem I have read about is that even after replacing the file it makes no difference so have included an instruction to register that file which (if I am to believe what I have read) will fix the issue.

To register the file follow this:

You can repeat this instruction with msvcr80.dll if required.

    Problem solved

As it turns out, AVG found the problem to be a conflict with Zone Alarm Firewall. ZA has released a fix for the problem which AVG and I confirm works.

    Thanks for the advice supplied.:)
