Have a wireless laptop running on DSL and Windows 7
For 2 concetive days, Windows has shut down to prevent damage to the computer.
The first time, I ignored as a fluke because it restarted right away.
Tonight when it happened,I went into safe mode and the message said it had recovered from an error. I copied the details which mean nothing to me and am including them
I don't knpw whether I have anyrhing to be concerned about or not.
    Thanks for your help

I'm far from sure, but the only thing I can think of right now is heat. Make sure there is sufficient air circulation around your heat vents.

You can test this easily enough. Put the computer in a warm (not too warm) place for a while and turn it on---see how long it takes to shut down for the same reason. Then put it in a cool (not too cool) place for a while and try the test again. If it takes longer the second time, it probably is a heat issue.

    I hope this helps.

Run the minidump - C:\Windows\Minidump\120310-39156-01.dmp - through our Dump Data collection tool (revised Dec 1) and post the log here.

It may yield some pointers to the cause of the problem.

Thanks Pete for replying. I cannot download correctly unless I have Net 4.
I went to the address given to download it and it is no longer available.
    Do you have another address?

There is no need for .NET 4 if you only require the debugging tools ......

You appear to have posted the setup log for the Debugging Tools :)

Have you also downloaded the debugwiz.zip as noted - the link is at the bottom of the page

    Pete,
Sorry , it took so long to get back to you, I was away overnight.
This thing has got me whipped. I cannot get it to work.
None of the commands I get on the installation, match the instructions. I find it too confusing for my limited experience.
I have spent hours on it. My download is successful, yet I can't find it. I already have winrar installed.
    I am frustrated.

I have asked Arie to edit the instructions to make them a little clearer ....

Am I right to assume you have successfully installed the debugging tools in the first step of the instructions?

    Then ....

Download debug.wiz through this link and save it to a location on your hard drive that you specify - In 7 Downloads is a good location.

Navigate to the .zip file and right click on it > Extract all.

There is no need for Winrar for zip files - an extraction facility for zip files has been built into Windows since XP.

Right click on debugwiz.exe and select Run as administrator.

You should see the window in the screenshot - follow on with Arie's instructions from there ....

    Pete.
    I am helpless.
I download the both tools, I can find the zip tool but never the debugging tool. It does not show up in the zip tool either.
I even tried installing the debugging through the zip tool with no luck.
When I download the debugging tool,I follow all prompts until I get to finish. All I get in the prompts is to save, not to run program.
I download and unzip on a regular basis, what is my problem?
Thanks for your patience and help.

Log onto http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkID=191420 and click on the Download button.

Save the download to your hard drive - I made a folder Debugging Tools

Double click on winsdk_web.exe to install

When the warning window appears - screenshot - click OK to continue

When the Setup Wizard window appears - screenshot - click on Next

Agree to the licence terms - Next

In the Install Location Window leave the defaults as they are - screenshot - Next

In the Installation Options window uncheck everything checked by default and check Debugging Tools - screenshot - Next and Next again

The installation will begin - you must be connected to the Internet - screenshot - the installation will take a few minutes.

When the Installation Complete window is shown uncheck View the Windows SDK Release Notes and click on Finish.

I have reached the max no. of attachments per post so the lastscreenshot is in my next post.

Locate where you unzipped the debug wizard zip file to and right click on debugwiz.exe > run as Administrator. In the window which opens - screenshot - Select the Advanced check-box and click the Browse button next to "Location of the debugging tools…"
Locate and select cdb.exe (by default in C:\Program Files\Debugging Tools for Windows (x86)\ )
If you are running a 64-bit OS, you can find cdb.exe in C:\Program Files\Debugging Tools for Windows (x64)\ )

Ignore these last 2 posts for the moment - there appears to be an issue with the SDK.

    There is something wrong here.
I never get the I agree prompt.
I get a maintainance screen which gives gives me the options, add to, change, remove features, repair or uninstall.
I think this is where I'm having my problem.

After a couple of hours banging my head against the wall it has now ceased to hurt - I have resolved the problem :)

Installing the SDK does not install the Debugging Tools - only the installers are downloaded and the appropriate set of Debugging Tools must then be installed.
That is because you already have the SDK installed. Hit the Repair option - it does no harm - been there, done that.

    Then navigate to ....

    C:\Program Files\Microsoft SDKs\Windows\v7.1\Redist\Debugging Tools for Windows\

Double click on dbg_amd64.msi to install the 64 bit version of the Debugging Tools or dbg_x86.msi to install the 32 bit version depending on your OS.

Once these are installed they will be in .....

    C:\Program Files\Debugging Tools for Windows (x64)\ for 64 bit Windows 7

    C:\Program Files\Debugging Tools for Windows (x86)\ for 32 bit Windows 7

    as indicated in the instructions.

The rest of the process should be plain sailing - I know it works as I have just debugged a .dmp file that I keep for testing.

    I cannot do this.
I printed all your instructions and followed them
I went to the debugger tool website and read those instructions.
I have the debugger tool on my computer but cannot understand how to uae it.
I know it's me but I don't know what else to do.
You have given me excellent instructions but I'm just not getting it.

It's been one of those days - I seem to have spent all day with the Debugging Tools issue and have finally sorted it.
Are you talking about the debug wizard - debugwiz.exe or the Windows Debugging Tools?

If you are running 7 x64 is this folder present ....

    C:\Program Files\Debugging Tools for Windows (x64)

If you are running 7 x86 (32 bit) is this folder present .....

    C:\Program Files\Debugging Tools for Windows (x86)

Please confirm which of the two or neither. Then I will know whether or not the Debugging Tools are installed and can lead you through the Debug Wizard.

OK - we should be good to go :)

Right click on Debugwiz.exe and select Run as Administrator.
In the DebugWiz window click on Browse and navigate to your dump file, click on it to select and then on open - screenshot

Then check the Advanced button, click on Browse and browse to ....

    C:\Program Files\Debugging Tools for Windows (x86)\cdb.exe

Click on cdb.exe to select it and then on Open - screenshot

Then click on Generate Log and follow the on screen instructions.

The log will be saved here - C:\debuglog.txt

Open the log in Notepad and copy/paste the contents into your next post here.

    Debugwiz.exe.
