Recently my computer has been "hanging up" on something at random times. At this point the light indicating that my hard drive is processing something just stays on, the computer becomes unresponsive, and I can hear the internal parts making weird noises (beeps, whirrs, what sounds like a tiny siren).

I am writing this in safe mode now, which appears to prevent this error from happening, but is there a way to find out what is causing my computer to do this?

Event Viewer would be a good place to look for clues :)

I've gone through my event log, but it seems to be something different every time it crashes. It has been bonjour service, WMI, Winlogon, CAPI2, and some other things as well. I'm wondering if there is a bad Windows file that when called on puts the computer into an endless loop?

The diagnostic found a corrupted sector, but I need to back up my files first. I won't be able to do that until Wednesday night, but I'll get back here with the results.

I ran the hard disk diagnostic again with it saying I have a corrupted sector. (Failure code 0x70 Technical Result Code:7000E971) I'm not sure what to do at this point, because my 2 options are A. Delete all the data on the sector or B. Try to repair and also probably lose all data on the drive. I would just back up whatever is on the corrupted drive, but I have no idea where it is (diagnostic tool does not say what the sector is, so I would have to back up my entire hard drive.)

From your first and last posts one conclusion is that the drive is dying and a replacement is in order. Although several drive manufacturer's offer drive cloning software as do third party suppliers to assist in the installation of a new drive this method requires the new drive to be installed alongside the old drive which is not practical in a laptop..

The data in a corrupted sector is also likely to be corrupted.

However running CHKDSK with the /F & /R switches may resolve the issue, but back up your data first. As you know a current backup of data should always be maintained to cover for issues such as this :)

If that fails to resolve the issue you could use Windows Backup to image the drive to DVD and then restore the image to a new drive. I think this is possible - have not had the need to try that out - so a little reading up on the subject would be worthwhile.

I have backed up my music, my documents, and my important files, but Windows backup won't work- it keeps getting an error at around 67%. Is there another way I can create a Windows backup? I would rather not delete the corrupted sector through the diagnostic unless I know I can get my computer back to how it is now.

Also, I ran CHKDSK with the switches, but the command prompt only popped up for a split second when I ran it, so I'm not sure if this did anything.

What is the error code and message when Windows Backup fails? There are other ways to image the drive using third party software.
    I should have mentioned .....

Open an elevated command prompt - Orb > Alll Programs > Accessories - right click on Command Prompt - run as Administrator and enter the CHKDSK command at the prompt.

The message that pops up when the backup fails is "The request could not be performed because of an I/O device error." I'll look into third party software to make a backup.

I went ahead and ran the chkdsk again as administrator with the error "Cannot open volume for direct access. "

What are you backing up to - an internal/external drive or to DVD?

An external drive - the file would be around 76 GB.

I went to a store today to look at how much hard drives ran for and talked a little to someone there. He said there is a strong possibility that the corrupted sector could have been caused by malware or a worm. Is there a recommended scanner I can use to see if this is true?

The reason I asked for the backup up destination was the error message you received ....
This suggests the possibility of an error on the destination drive ....

Error message when you try to perform a full backup on a Windows Vista-based computer: "The request could not be performed because of an I/O device error "
See this for possible solutions ....

can't run chkdsk on boot drive - 3rd post.
Wouldn't be too sure of that - really a question for one of our malware analysts, but you can check the system using MalwareBytes - update before running.

I went to the store again and the tech person there found the problem- I have over 30 open TCP ports. He said I have a rootkit that caused this to happen, and the only way to get rid of it is to reformat. However, I would like to see if I can still fix this without reformatting. Is there any rootkit scanner that would remove this?

When you try and run chkdsc it won't run unless you answer Y to the question in the command prompt then it will run when you reboot.

A rootkit can be dealt with if you use our Virus and Malware forum. Our expert there will help you to clean out your system. Follow this instruction below.

Well, my computer is now completely free of malware, but still no luck.
My system idle process is at 74%, and my computer still freezes at random(See this thread). Any other ideas as to what could be causing this? The only other thing I can think of is to re-format, but I'd really like to avoid that.

System Idle is the 'amount' of the CPU which is not being used - with the computer idle you would expect to see that around 99%.

Look at the Processes tab and try to isolate which process is using the CPU - clicking on the CPU header will sort in ascending or descending order. Make sure that Show Processes for all users is checked.

As an alternative you could look at Process Explorer from MS.

I have 12 instances of chrome.exe (Google Chrome)with the top eight taking 12,000-8,000k, but other than that just a bunch of programs with less than 8,000k. When I don't have Google Chrome open, my highest one is Explorer.exe at 14,700k

Is it normal for Google Chrome to have this many instances running? That could be whats clogging up my TCP ports if they're all "listening. "
