I use XP Pro SP3 with all the updates done on a regular basis on my PC. I have always had a C:\WINDOWS\Temp folder and from time to time would clean out the junk in it. I did a Windows Update recently and noticed I no longer had my C:\WINDOWS\Temp folder. I have the same OS and Updates on my laptop and I do have the C:\WINDOWS\Temp folder. Question number 1 is: Does XP need that folder to operate correctly 2) Where are the files that use to accumulate in that folder now going? 3) Should I just not worry about it or 4) Should I create the folder manually and reboot

    Thanks for your help.

    Ric

Hi Ric. To answer your questions:

    1. I would say that Windows does need the folder to be in the C:\Windows directory since its found in all installations of Windows.
    2. I wouldn't know where the temp files would be stored without the folder being present on the system.
    3. I would take action instead of ignoring the problem.
    4. Yes you should recreate the folder and reboot the PC.

Also please enter your System Details. It helps us in answering your questions.

Note: A common error is to forget to show your System Details in your profile:

Make sure to do the above when entering your System Details, thanks.

    Evan,

Thanks. I manually added the temp folder and rebooted. It stayed and the WGAerrlog.txt file that I was used to seeing is there again in the temp folder. I know it is just part of Windows Genuine Advantage Validation Tool, which can be annoying, but I missed that file.

You are right about system specs...I will add them. In the mean time here they are.

Intel Core 2 Quad Q9400@2.66 GHz

Asus P5N-D Motherboard (NVIDIA nForce 750i SLI, Socket 775)

    Corsair XMS2 2048 MB DDR2 PC6400 RAM

ATI RADEON HD 4850 Graphics (512 MB)

    Sony - 20x Internal Double-Layer DVD±RW/CD-RW Drive

Asus P5N-D Motherboard (NVIDIA nForce 750i SLI, Socket 775)

SEAGATE SATA 500 MB HARD-DRIVE (2 of them)

Super Talent Atomic Juice PS-600 600W ATX12V SLI Power Supply

    Tripp Lite OMNI650LCD - UPS

    Samsung SyncMaster 22" Widescreen

Thanks and I will keep my eye on that folder for a few days.

    Ric

    Evan,

Thanks I added manually rebooted and the folder (temp) is still there. Also the file WGAerrlog.txt which is just a part of the annoying Windows Genuine Advantage Validation Tool but I wondering where it was going without the temp folder in windows.

You are right about the specs...I should have been more specific: Here they are and I will add to my profile.

    Evan,

Added manually and rebooted and it worked. My pesky little WGAerrlog.txt file was back. Wonder where it has been going...did a search and could not find it. I will add the specs to my PC - you are right, I should have.

    Thanks again,

    Ric
