Please help. I am obviously computer dumb. I was trying to remove AVG from my computer and mistakenly ran Regedit and deleted folders from it. NOW the computer is dead. The only thing I can get to is my Task Manager Bar. All of my icons are gone and the start key. My enternet is dead also. When I try to run in safe mode and reboot from earlier configuration nothing works. Please help. I have tried a lot of things. WHAT HAVE I DONE. a:confused: and what can I do to get my computer working again. I have a Compaq Presario from years ago and I am running Windows XP. Please help. :(

Your best bet is to run a Repair installation of Windows XP. Insert the OS disc and boot the PC if it doesn't start of by asking if you wish to boot from the CD then you will need to go into your bios and set the CD/DVD drive to 1st in the boot order, then start again. Answer yes to boot from the CD. Follow the prompts until you reach a screen where there is a choice to run a Repair Install (not to be confused with Recovery which comes first). Once complete this should be working normally again. If you want to remove AVG you can download an AVG remove tool, just do a search for it from your browser.

    The computer is dead.

I'm not just dealing with deleted registry files. I have a virus that is causing the computer not to run at all. It blocks me from the internet. All of my icons are gone. All of my folders and most of everything else is now extensions. I cannot do anything from the command prompt. It doesnt recongnize anything. It will not boot from the computer drives even after I select boot from the bios and select boot from the CD. The system is dead. I don't know what to do know. The only thing the computer does it takes me straight to the blue screen of death and just sits there. The only thing this computer allows me to do is CTRL-ALT-DLT to get to the task manager bar. Nothing works from Safe Mode or Safe mode with Command prompting. I feel HOPELESS:confused::(

:eek:With the PC powered up insert the Windows XP disc then reboot, it should boot from the disc. Does that work?? If not explain what it does. Sounds like you may have tried this, I just need to clarify.

Do you have a genuine Windows XP disc or is the CD you mentioned just a Recovery disc.

Stick with it and we should be able to get to the bottom of this problem;)

I've tried everything not given up.

I have tried that. I am at work. I will try when I get home. I appreciate the concern and post. I originally tried to delete this virus named 96785865 I THINK.....:rolleyes:upon trying to delete I deleted some registry folders. Meanwhile my computer crashed and the virus has taken over. I have tried several safe mode command prompts -safe mode. Of course system recovery is out of the question. I will tell you exactly what it does when I return tommorow. NO it is not an authentic copy of windows XP, But it is a copy burned to a Disc. It is not a recovery disk. Thanks. I will check back in around 10:00 A.M. EST.
