Resolved Windows services.

Hello I am having a problem when I need to view the services started in 'computer management', I could only view the standard the extended tag could not display. A pop up saying :
"windows internet explorer
one or more activeX controls could not be displayed because either:
1) your current security settings prohibit running ActiveX controls on this page, or
2) you have blocked a publisher of one of the controls.
As a result, the page might not display correctly. ".
Please someone let me know to solve it. My OS.XP Pro. SP3. Thanks.

Since the error is yelping about "internet explorer" activex security, check if ie options on the security tab, for "all" zones, is set to default and not using a setting to high as to block or disallow activex.

Ie 7 but 8 is pretty much the same:

Thanks for your reply. I have tried but it did bot help. I do not whether it is due to item 1 as mentioned in my post or to other. Some program when I open it also pop up the same error. Any further help will be much appreciate.

When you say you tried does that mean you had settings higher than default and have now reset them to default?

Have you checked the options for any other security program you may be running such as a malware/adware scanner or virus program that may have disabled activex? Have you scanned and cleaned recently to make sure your critter free?

Sympton: error "One or more activex controls yada yada
Here is the solution given to me by Microsoft, it worked perfectly.
You may have this and if so you should delete 1 extra (parasite) zone from HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings\Zones\
with pseudo-graphic number, you'll see it before zone number 0.
It seems this is a bug of Adobe flash player update, though I am not sure.
The pseudo-graphic number they speak of before zone number 0 looks like a miniature upper case "L ".

Delete that registry entry and all is well.

To expand on the above:
Normally there are no more than five subkeys or "zones" under that key, numbered 0,1,2,3,4.
In your case however there might be one more. The new zone has been added by the malware and explains the odd behaviour of the OS.
It can be numbered but often it's easily recognized because of a weird symbol instead of a number. Once you delete that extra fake zone the OS will behave normally.

If indeed you have this extra zone, I would "run not walk" to our malware/adware virus forum and get helping to make sure I am critter free.

Thanks for your reply. In the Zones there are a few tags which are L,1,2,3 and 4. Which tag should I chose or just the Zones which have the name: default, Securitysafe and selfhealcount. Kindly let me know.

 

It's the L zone key. Don't forget to backup the registry before doing this. then I recommend a trip to our virus forum to eliminate the possibility that you are critter infested. See:

Thanks for the reply, in "L" tag there are two items namely, default and blue icon name 1806, which one should I click and change the setting. At present default is having, 'type' reg_sz and 'data' having value not set. In 1806 'type' reg_word having reg_dword and 'data' having 0x00000000 (0). I do hope you can guide me through.

Seems to be a bit of a misunderstanding on what you are looking for and if found, deleting. See exampled pictured directions below. It is hkeys on the left side that we are concerned and looking for. Do not delete values found on the right side. Note the zones folder. When highlighted there should be 0,1,2,3,4, maybe one more but no L folder should be there among the listed numbers. if there is an "L ", on the left, it is the whole hkey (or what looks like a subdirectory folder) that needs deletion. Just right click on the L and select delete.

The hkey you need to look for and delete would be a subdirectory on the list in the left side under \zones. See: Just the pictures, don't even know what the issue is for this reference, I just grabbed it for the visual pics.

To export this hkey before editing you may wish to do this:
I consider this a low to no risk non-system critical edit, for safety sake, you need to export Hkey. This is directions on exporting an hkey. Just modify directions and do this on the hkey named "Zones "(<- subfolder under internet settings). Give it a name that makes sence to you. Save it in a safe place. This will allow you to restore the registry to a state that it was before you edited it, should the need arise.

Having said the above and to sum up booklet...
Go on. You can do it. You can do it. I am sure, if you follow directions, export hkey, and compare your results with pictures in links you cannot make an error or mistake. Instructions can not be any easier.

If you are really uncomfortable dong this, don't. It is more important that you follow directions and go to our virus forum, where our expertly trained members will help in making sure you are critter clean. While, the fact that you seem to have a *\zones hkey of "L" does not necessarily mean you are infected, it just places the odds in favor of you being so. The possibility must be eliminated or we could be just spitting in the wind anyway.

Besides, even after doing the registry editing, the malware/adware/virus checkup would have to be done anyway. I was just curious if this would take care of your immediate "symptom ". I am pretty sure, it would not have been sole root of your problem anyway.

 

Thanks again goddez1 I really appreciate your help. I do not know what and why it is causing the problem. Even at some application when I click to open, it give the same error pop up. Anyway if anyone have a solution to it are welcome to help and regarding malware or virus, I have scan with Malwarebytes and ESS. which came out clean. Looking forward to hear further help.

 

Eset is activex based and installs and uses it's own controls. Perhaps an up date may be required. Have you thought of disabling or uninstalling this, further I suggest you try an uninstall of eset.? Have you made sure this is compatible with xp service pack 3.

Did you work up the bravery to delete the registry hkey I have asked you to?
