Arie is quite right, it does work and I just realised where I was going wrong as I had split the command lines and seen the > as enter:eek::eek::eek:.

Pastorjoe777, this is how I made it work and found the file (so easy when you know how:)). Run the two commands from the command prompt which I guess you have done, if it is showing nothing, other than a new line with the blinking underscore, then that is correct. Close the command prompt box.

Open notepad, look under Format to make sure Word Rap is checked. Click on File and then Open, find and click on your C drive to reveal its contents and you will see both the .txt files in there. Open the files and paste & copy them into your next post.

I just open Window Explorer and look in the root of the C drive for the .txt files. Double click them & they will open.

Thanks for the heads up on Word Wrap. I'm not sure what the default is.

It's very odd that your DNS server is listed as 192.168.1.1. It should be the same IP as the Westel router, 192.168.2.1.

Go to Control Panel > Network Connections > rt click Local Area Connection > Properties > double click Internet Protocol TCP/IP > checkmark :eek:btain an IP address automatically" and also checkmark "obtain DNS server address automatically ".

If no joy after doing that, repeat the steps and checkmark "Use the following DNS server address and enter 192.168.2.1.

You could run this command netsh interface ip set dns "Local Area Connection" dhcp which will change the setting Tony mentions above.

Thank you guys for everything you have suggested, but no juice. If it's a bug then I will need some new updated (expensive) program to catch it. Nothing so far has allowed me to sign in to my facebook accont. I hate to keep you going back and forth. If there is anything else I will try it, if not maybe I will just have to get a new hard drive. :(:(:(

    do this again:
    ipconfig /all >c:\ip.txt.
to verify the DNS server has changed.

Next thing to tshoot is the modem itself. Those Westels are vulnerable to DNS "hijacks" if they have the default username and password.

You'll probably have to check out your routers settings. I'll leave that for Tony, he has more experience dealing with different routers then I have.

Let's see if manually adding DNS servers changes things:

Control Panel > Network Settings > rt click Local Area Connection > Properties > double click Internet Protocol TCP/IP > checkmark Use the following DNS server addresses >

    Primary: 8.8.8.8
    Alternate: 8.8.4.4

Those are the Google public DNS server addresses.

After the settings have been changed:

In Control Panel, double click Internet Options > delete all Temporary Internet Files, cookies, site preferences, history...ALL of it.

Restart networking: Start > Logoff > Log back on.

Then open IE and type the address for facebook.

    OK.
    Next 2 things:

    1. delete the text file create with this:
    ipconfig /all >c:\ip.txt
and then run the command again to see if DNS change is in place.

    2. Start > Run
    Notepad c:\windows\system32\drivers\etc\hosts
    Post contents here.

I had the same problem last week. I was actually in Facebook and went to follow a message and the whole thing dissappeared. IE said Cannot Connect as is it's custom, so I tried a refresh, closed IE and opened it again.
Closed all my IE instances and opened them again and Facebook was not available.

About three minutes later it was back and working normally, my account was even open, where usually it logs out when IE is closed.

It's a first. I think Facebook is trying some new stuff. Today I got a message from a friend (7 Hours ago), and when I followed the link Facebook says "Content unavailable, the message may have timed out. "

Arie, at some point in this thread that was suggested. I had already scanned my system with Malawarebytes a month ago and nothing. I did it again when suggested plus, I used the Combofix. They found nothing. So, at this point if there is not much else to then I shoould probably get another hard drive.

Pastorjoe777, if you are not experiencing any other problems then it is unlikely that your hard drive has anything wrong with it but to check it you could run chkdsk /r from the command prompt. This test can take over an hour to complete and will give a fairly good diagnosis of the drive surface and the files system. You could also download Seagate Seatools from here http://www.seagate.com/www/en-us/support/downloads/seatools/ which will give your drive a complete test, choose the version for DOS.

I am sure TonyT will manage to help you find the fault. Replacing the hard drive and having a clean install of windows may fix the error, but that may not change anything if the fault is in the router.

Thanks Mark. I am still hopeful since my knowledge of routers is extremely limited.

Tony, I can log in to my router (192.168.1.1.) via verizon. Is there anything I should look for in there that may need changing???

And you had an expert look at the log?

    I'm out of ideas.
