The operating system is Vista and this is a compaq presario that i having this issue with. If anyone has input on what I should do or purchase to resolve this I would be very grateful! Hi Korey,
have you re-installed the network card?, re-reading your post I would suppose not if the system recovery is not finishing?
Try turning the network card off, and plug the laptop into a LAN port if available on your modem/router, once you have network connection again turn the wireless button back on and allow it to find & install the new hardware!
Another silly thought, have you been able to set up your wireless network? you more than likely will need to re-set the SSID & Password

    Regards Jac

You say System Recovery will not complete, so we don't know how well Windows is working.

Go to Start(orb) and in the Start Search bar type Device Manager and open Device Manager (also known as Device Mangler :)). You should see any problems listed. Under the heading Network Adapters should be where the wireless network adapter should be listed. Another network adapter is the LAN. LAN is connecting with a cable rather than wirelessly.

Look in Start -> Network and check if there are any connections listed there. Then look in the menus/toolbars and go to Network and Sharing Center, under Sharing and Discovery, turn on Network Discovery.

If you are trying to connect wirelessly and the drivers for the wireless adapter are not installed, you wont connect. You can try connecting with a cable (LAN), but the LAN/Ethernet adapter drivers need to be installed.

You need to check if the drivers are installed to run the adapters.

Look up your model on the Compaq/HP website. It is their system. Look up error messages in their support system. Have you installed the new hard drive using their instructions? Check in case you need to purchase a set of installation disks to install Windows on the new hard disk drive.

The original hard drive likely had a hidden section (partition) which stores the driver installers for the computer hardware, which would be done by the Recovery program.

Follow advice in above post and download the drivers for your comp at the Compaq site.

    Hi Paul,

I waited for two days before replying when I wondered if I might be able to expand on jacrabbit's reply. TonyT's reply might be an expansion of my mine, so most of the replies could have just about been combined into one. Admin asked for system details, but if the Windows installation is not working correctly (especially drivers), running a hardware identification program might not work.

Often people wait a day or so to see if there are any other responses to their question.

It was not as if jacrabbit, TonyT and I were offering suggestions "willy-nilly ", they were along the same lines and based on getting the correct drivers installed.
