Actually the problem is not resolved. I was merely testing another card to prove that its probably not the windows software. I still need to resolve the problem relating to the 470gtx card.

Problem with your card then. If the card is under warranty, demand a replacement.

    Two (ultimate) suggestions:

    1. Reformat & reinstall Windows. If you then still get the same problem that leaves you with

    2. Choose another video card

I have done the former. Clean Windows install and then the Nvidia drivers only.

I think your suggestion of another card is apt.....

    Thanks

Many thanks for all the help & suggestions. I think I have found the solution. I have a Gigabyte motherboard and when it was installed one of the utils was an energy saver. I was unaware this had installed. I suspect that because my GPU is quite power hungry & this enegy saver software is not working properly it reduces the energy at the wrong time. A lesser GPU doesn't have the same problem as it doesn't need as much power. Doen't explain why Windows 7 is not so sensitive, but time will tell. Better now I have uninstalled the E/save.

    Thanks for posting back.

Who would have thought that a little utility would turn out to be a show stopper

In fact most of us would not have even looked/asked for it. How embarrassing.
