    [Resolved] CashTitan - beware

    Does anyone know about "Tagging System CashTitan ".
    It seems to be some type of MalWare and even though it appears in the Add/Remove Programs list any attempt to uninstall it prompts you for a password.

    It appears to randomly open urls (with the default web browser) which are advertisements.

    Besides that I also noticed that all my 'restore points' mysteriously disappeared which prevented me from restoring Windows to an earlier date - I have previously restored Windows to a previous date to remove nasties.

    Does anyone know of and free SpyWare removers. I tried AdAware and also Spyware Doctor (advertised here) but after installation when I tried to update the signature file all attempts failed - could this be also be 'controlled' by CashTitan?

    Sorry I have NO IDEA what 'logs' you refer to.
    I have 'posted' all the information I can think of.
    The random windows which appear look like an Internet Explorer window and are usually headed "RON ads by cashtitan" and advertise 'scratch 2 cash'.
    I come from an IT industry (some year ago) and know what 'logs' are but this time I am 'stumped' as what is required.
    Do you mean the html code of the web page displayed?

    Sorry,
    I DID click on the link earlier but after waiting for several minutes nothing happened. I wasn't sure if this was because the server was busy, down or that somehow my MalWare was preventing access.
    I'll try again

    No problem :)

    If you have difficulty in opening that page or are unable to download DDS please try on another computer and transfer the file across on a USB stick to the Desktop of the affected computer and run.

    If you still have problems please wait for one of our Malware analysts to advise.

    Thanks for the info.
    I WAS able to get to the link and download from another PC - that is really worrying me now as my PC must have some terrible MalWare. I was considering reformatting and reloading Windows and applications which would take hours. Hopefully now I won't have to do that.
    I ran the software, saved the .txt files and had to copy them to a usb stick and go back to the other PC to send them as I ALSO now cannot post a reply from the infected PC (everything else appears to operate ok).
    I could not find a method to attach the files to this post so assume that I need to include the text as a 'cut and paste' so here it is -

    You have posted the contents of the Attach.txt twice - please post the contents of the DDS.txt.

    I see you have P2P software ( Azures, Limewire, BitTorrent, uTorrent etc…) installed on your machine. We are not here to pass judgment on file-sharing as a concept. However, we will warn you that engaging in this activity and having this kind of software installed on your machine will always make you more susceptible to re-infections. It may be contributing to your current situation. This page will give you further information.

    Please note: Even if you are using a "safe" P2P program, it is only the program that is safe. You will be sharing files from uncertified sources, and these are often infected. The bad guys use P2P filesharing as a major conduit to spread their wares and their infections.

    References for the risk of these programs are here, and here.

    I would strongly recommend that you uninstall them, and read the links above for educational value!

    Note: Please be advised that continued use of these programs after being warned of the danger of infections from them, may result in the discontinued help of future cleaning of your system here at WindowsBBS Malware and Virus removal.

    A Malware expert will have a look at your log in due course.

    Thanks Pete

    I am aware of dangers of downloading from P2P however I usually only ever use this to download DOX and Mp3 files which I always scan using AVG (free version). Maybe the Malware came from some unscrupulous web site I recently visited.

    I can safely say that all installed software has been paid for, is freeware or came off a magazine cover disk.

    I am hopeful that someone can pinpoint where the problem is although looking at the logs I have found that I am missing ASPI32 from the System32>drivers folder.

    For what it's worth I have noticed that when I attempted to go to the link to download DDS, Firefox displayed in the bottom 'bar' - Transferring data from p.brilig.com

    I still don't see the DDS log ? Only the Attach.txt.

    The contents of the DDS log are identical to Attach log.

    Sorry Pete,
    I thought that I had doubled checked that. I am in a bit of a 'tiz' as the other PC is upstairs and I am having to go up and down the stairs and getting tired and confused.

    Here is the DDS file

    Please download and run the below tool named Rkill (courtesy of BleepingComputer.com) which may help allow other programs to run.

    There are 4 different versions. If one of them won't run then download and try to run the other one.

    Vista and Win7 users need to right click Rkill and choose Run as Administrator

    You only need to get one of these to run, not all of them. You may get warnings from your antivirus about this tool, ignore them or shutdown your antivirus.

    * Rkill.com
    * Rkill.scr
    * Rkill.pif
    * Rkill.exe

    • * Double-click on the Rkill desktop icon to run the tool.
      * If using Vista or Windows 7 right-click on it and choose Run As Administrator.
      * A black DOS box will briefly flash and then disappear. This is normal and indicates the tool ran successfully.
      * If not, delete the file, then download and use the one provided in Link 2.
      * If it does not work, repeat the process and attempt to use one of the remaining links until the tool runs.
      * Do not reboot until instructed.
      * If the tool does not run from any of the links provided, please let me know.

    Once you've gotten one of them to run then try to immediately run the following.

    ===============================================================

    STEP 1. Download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware (aka MBAM): http://www.malwarebytes.org/mbam.php to your desktop.
    (Malwarebytes is free to use as a manual scanner. Payment is only required if you wish to have it run and update automatically which is not necessary for our purposes)

    * Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
    * At the end, be sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
    * If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
    * Once the program has loaded, select Perform Quick Scan, then click Scan.
    * When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
    * Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
    * When completed, a log will open in Notepad.
    * Post the log back here.

    The log can also be found here:
    C:\Documents and Settings\Username\Application Data\Malwarebytes\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\Logs\log-date.txt
    Or at C:\Program Files\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\Logs\log-date.txt

    STEP 2. Download GMER: http://www.gmer.net/files.php, by clicking on Download EXE button.
    Alternative downloads:
    - http://majorgeeks.com/GMER_d5198.html
    - http://www.softpedia.com/get/Interne...ers/GMER.shtml
    Double click on downloaded .exe file, select Rootkit tab and click the Scan button.
    Do NOT use the computer while GMER is running!
    When scan is completed, click Save button, and save the results as gmer.log
    Warning ! Please, do not select the "Show all" checkbox during the scan.
    Post the log to your next reply.

    IMPORTANT! If for some reason GMER refuses to run, try again.
    If it still fails, try to UN-check "Devices" in right pane.
    If still no joy, try to run it from Safe Mode.

    STEP 3. Download MBRCheck to your desktop

    Double click MBRCheck.exe to run (Vista and Windows 7 users, right click and select Run as Administrator).
    It will show a black screen with some data on it.
    A report called MBRcheckxxxx.txt will be on your desktop
    Open this report and post its content in your next reply.

    DO NOT make any other changes to your computer (like installing programs, using other cleaning tools, etc.), until it's officially declared clean!!!

    Thanks
    I followed the instructions exactly.
    Here are the results.
    RKILL
    Downloaded and ran ok but it didn't display that it found anything (not sure if it was supposed to).
    It did NOT instruct me to reboot.
    MBAM
    Downloaded, installed and ran as instructed
    It found and downloaded the latest version
    Her is the log

    Skip GMER for now and proceed with MBRCheck.

    Your computer is seriously infected. Some scans will tale a while and you have to be patient, unless you want to:
    Let me know, what your decision is.

    Done!

    Now that you have suggested that GMER could take a long long time I will run it again if required - I will run it overnight and let it run for 8+ hours (or whatever you suggest). TH\he first time I ran it I considered the PC had HUNG after 2.5 hours especially when I could not do anything else (even CTRL-SHIFT - DELETE had no effect).
    If you suggest that I run it again please advise if I should disable AVG and Ad-Aware (other processes in my task bar are QuickTime, RealTek HD Audio Manager, Safely Remove Hardware, Java Update Available and Bluetooth should I disable those too?).
    Also should I disable DEVICES (tab) when (re)running GMER?

    Lastly I have had no further instances of CashTitan popping up advertising scratch for cash (or anything else) since running MBAM.

    Very good :)

    Let's leave GMER alone for now....

    Please download ComboFix from [color= "Red"]Here[/color] or [color= "#FF0000"]Here[/color] to your Desktop.

    [color= "Blue"]**Note: In the event you already have Combofix, this is a new version that I need you to download. It is important that it is saved directly to your desktop**[/color]
    1. Please, never rename Combofix unless instructed.
    2. Close any open browsers.
    3. Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.
      • Very Important! Temporarily disable your anti-virus, script blocking and any anti-malware real-time protection before performing a scan. They can interfere with ComboFix or remove some of its embedded files which may cause "unpredictable results ".
      • Click on [color= "Red"]this link[/color] to see a list of programs that should be disabled. The list is not all inclusive. If yours is not listed and you don't know how to disable it, please ask.
      NOTE1. If Combofix asks you to install Recovery Console, please allow it.
      NOTE 2. If Combofix asks you to update the program, always do so.
      • Close any open browsers.
      • [color= "Red"]WARNING:[/color] Combofix will disconnect your machine from the Internet as soon as it starts
      • Please do not attempt to re-connect your machine back to the Internet until Combofix has completely finished.
      • If there is no internet connection after running Combofix, then restart your computer to restore back your connection.
    4. Double click on combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
    5. When finished, it will produce a report for you.
    6. Please post the "C:\ComboFix.txt"
    **Note: Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it's running. That may cause it to stall**

    Make sure, you re-enable your security programs, when you're done with Combofix.

    DO NOT make any other changes to your computer (like installing programs, using other cleaning tools, etc.), until it's officially declared clean!!!

    Yes. Combofix does it for security reason.

    1. Please open Notepad
    • Click Start , then Run
    • Type notepad .exe in the Run Box.

    2. Now copy/paste the entire content of the codebox below into the Notepad window:

    Code:
    File::
    c:\windows\system32\jpvxtgfukhcrdt.exe

    FileLook::
    c:\windows\system32\comcat2.dll

    3. Save the above as CFScript.txt

    4. Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs again, so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.

    5. Then drag the CFScript.txt into ComboFix.exe as depicted in the animation below. This will start ComboFix again.

    6. After reboot, (in case it asks to reboot), please post the following reports/logs into your next reply:
    • Combofix.txt
