The store took out my 256MB RAM and put in a 1GB stick. Since I have two slots, can I put the 256MB back in the available slot? Will it run any faster?

    Welcome to WindowsBBS :)

We encourage all members to complete their System Specifications which help us to help you :)

Would be helpful to have those details, but in principle - yes.

Will it run any faster - marginally, maybe, but I doubt you would notice the difference.

It would be better to save your pennies and buy another identical 1Gb stick and insert that. As Pete said, you might see a little improvement, but it is likely that 256Mb, besides being only 256, is also slower RAM. And depending on your motherboard, it is likely the whole system, including the new RAM, will slow down to match the speed of the 256Mb stick - and that may actually hurt performance.
