[Inactive] multiple iexplore.exe running when IE is not on, strange sounds

Hello,

I've been having a very irritating problem on my PC. On occasion I will hear 10 second adverts, and the PC really slows down. I have tried using ad-aware and Spybot-search and destroy both in normal mode and safe mode and the problem keeps reappearing. I also notice iexplore.exe load up some many times. I keep shutting them, only to have them re-appear. I hope you can help.
