Hi sitkom, Welcome to Windowsbbs. When you started in Safe Mode, did you try starting with last known configuration?
What happens if you disconnect your DVD and take out the Firewire Card? I'm assuming you have a Firewire card installed or is it built in M/B? Neil.

You need to establish if it is the DVD drive or the firewire card which is causing the problem .....

Remove the firewire card and connect the new DVD drive - does Windows boot normally?

Disconnect the DVD drive and insert the firewire card - does Windows boot normally.

Were any drivers supplied with the firewire card?
That is correct - after the driver list has completed Windows should boot into Safe Mode. This may take a little time.

When you reinstalled Windows did you make a clean install with format or a repair install? If it was a clean install with format you must load the chipset and other drivers.

Asus have a number of M2N boards - you need to know which one .....

    http://uk.asus.com/Search.aspx?SearchKey=m2n

There is a download link alongside each motherboard listed.

It may be helpful if you post the Make & Model no, of the DVD drive and if it is EIDE or SATA.

I find it difficult to understand why a DVD drive connected correctly would cause the problem you have.

Do you have the opportunity to check out the DVD drive on another computer?

I would forget about the Firewire card for the moment and concentrate on solving the problem with the DVD drive.

That's great news :) Whenever you make a clean install you must load the chipset drivers, etc for the motherboard - just a reminder for future reference!

Unless the revised BIOS has new features that you require I would not update.
