My computer is an eMachine T4010 equipped with Windows XP. My primary browser is Explorer 7, although I occasionally use the Google Chrome browser whenever I want to quickly look up something without any add-ons.

Lately, every time I turn on my modem, a cookie entitled cdn4.specificclick.net always appears in the exact same place:

    C:\Documents and Settings\Owner\Application Data\Macromedia\Flash Player\#SharedObjects\SSV67Z69

So far, I never have had any trouble sending it to the recycle bin and deleting it, but I was wondering if there might be some way of immunizing my computer from always receiving it upon turning on the modem, as it is getting to be a nuisance. Note that I have done thorough searches of all my files and folders on drive C and my registry for both cdn4 and specificclick, as well as cdn4.specificclick and can conclusively say that the above mentioned SSV67Z69 folder is absolutely the only place it keeps appearing.

My computer is equipped with Avast On-Access Scanner and Spybot-SD Resident, and I always surf the web with both of them running. Is there any possible way of getting either of them, or whatever comes as standard equipment with Windows XP, to recognize this unwanted cookie and keep it from re-appearing?

Thank you in advance for any advice.

You mean to say it appears when you turn on the modem without running either IE or Chrome ?

Are you using any desktop enhancement program/web desktop ?

If you had Googled for cdn4 you would have found that it is apparently a net search redirect triggered by stealth search hijacker virus.

I suggest you head over to the Malware & Virus Removal forum .....

Please read this as indicated at the head of the forum and post the logs requested in a new thread.

I long ago deliberately placed two shortcut folders on my desktop that lead to these locations:

    C:\Documents and Settings\Owner\Application Data\Macromedia\Flash Player\#SharedObjects\SSV67Z69

    C:\Documents and Settings\Owner\Application Data\Macromedia\Flash Player\macromedia.com\support\flashplayer\sys

This is so that I can quickly and easily delete all the cookies that Flash Player sticks on my computer after I log off. What is really strange about this specificclick thing is that it is the only cookie that always appears in the #SharedObjects one, but not the other.

I am going to take PeteC's advice and post this over in the "Malware & Virus Removal" forum. As I said, although I never seem to have any trouble removing it, I really would like to figure out how to keep it from reappearing.
