It might be helpful if you would add your systems specs to your profile: click on the "User CP" button near the upper left of the web page then click on "Edit System Specs ". At least mention which OS you are using.

It might also be helpful if you would name the game too. You really haven't provided much info to go on.

    Hi

does CtrlAltDel have any effect at all?

...also, 'twould perhaps help if you say which OS you are running?

but it might just be that you're stuck with a seriously buggy game :(

    best wishes, HJ

Try to collapse the game to taskbar by using key combination of Alt + tab keys. This should allow you to click on the toolbar and select "Task manager" which, in turn, will allow you to "end task" on the non responding game via the "Applications Tab ".

If the above doesn't do it possibly the windows "flag key ", on the keyboard, will collaspe the game and open the startmenu. Once again open taskmanager and "end task" on the game.

If this doesn't work find a fix for the game or stop using it. Shutting your computer down in the manner you are doing is risking data corruption or harddrive damage. No game is worth that.

    how deep is the freeze?

Neil, it's Grand Theft Auto I suspect

hmmm, games & freezing up, I wonder if something might be getting a bit too hot?

situation like that would be making me want to reach for a reset button only if nothing on the keyboard does anything at all, that is (but many modern boxes don't have reset buttons, though)

using the reset button's one small stage less bad than reaching for the power switch: Ann's points about trashing HDD and OS by turning the power off are very valid; with the reset button you'd protect the HDD, but still risk corrupting your data.

light - Do you play other games with the same sort of level of graphics as GTA-SA on this computer without getting freezups? If you can get another video intensive game working OK, then it's less likely to be overheating and more likely down to software.

Failing a simple overheating thing, I'm bowing out to leave you in much better hands...

...anyway, GTA-SA's much too violent for me! I'm off to play something nice and peaceful like DooM (under DOS!) and blast the bejazers out of a few cacodemons...

    best wishes, HJ

Thanks for the explanation Hugh. Non use of capitals and abbreviations and lack of System Details don't help. I'm probably too long in the tooth to worry too much. Yes, you are right about the violence. There is far too much of it in these video games without any real consequences. No real life learning curves. End of sermon.
light, have a look in the game website for patches or cures for problems. I fixed my Tiger Woods Golf by asking in the website. Cheers Neil.

it's only really "resolved" when you've stopped the freezups ;)

but certainly, going to the GTA-SA site would be a very good move you may well find useful information there!

if you draw a blank there - well, we might try to find out if the game's making your graphics get too hot, run it a bit, stop before it freezes and check temperatures - something along those lines maybe

so - have a look at the GTA-SA site, see what you can find out - it may be a known issue with a fix available, they would be the folks who know if anybody does - and then let us know how you got on, which would be nice (particularly if you do find a fix, as that could help if other people here are having the same trouble)

good luck ...and best wishes, HJ

    Hi Light,

You may find these google hits on the topic of gta sa freezes, helpful. Reason's vary greatly so your going to have to figure out which apply to you. Perhaps there's a fix among them that will do ya'.

Grand Theft Auto San Andreas freezes and lockups

As Hugh asks, please remember to keep this post updated with your progress and share the fix that worked for you. Note that he also points out that should you decide to eliminate hardware, such as video card temperture issue, many here would be happy to walk you through that.

At the age of 15 and at your experience level you may be better off "appling and eliminating" using the easier methods shown on the google hit list first.

    Ditto on the luck. :)

Nice to know you found the fix. My first choice to look is at the Suppliers/Makers website/Forums for fixes/patches.
If you are happy with the result you can now mark this as Resolved. Cheers Neil.
