Flat panel displays have been available for years, but have also been "affordable" for the last two years or so.

So, what are you using for your primary/private computer?

I've been thinking of buying a flat panel display for a long time, but whenever i make up my mind to go out there and buy it, the thought of what will i do with my old CRT stops me.

I bought it way back in June 2002 and up till now it works perfectly. Can't just throw it away?

    Any ideas?

My 19" Trinitron will stay with me until it dies. The colors are excellent and it is easy on my eyes.

Ship it to me and I'll put it in my basement with the three that are already there.:)

Seriously, you should be able to recycle it at little or no cost, depending on where you live.

Upgrading to my ViewSonic VP930b LCD monitor was one of the best decisions (and investments) I ever made. I couldn't go larger because of lack of space, but the 19" 1280x1024 display is more than adequate for my needs.

I use a 17' inch Westinghouse flat panel monitor that I bought for about $100 roughly 3 years ago. Its been running well ever since and I was amazed by how much space I saved on my desk after getting it set up. My old CRT monitor took up a lot of space so I was relieved when I replaced it with the flat panel monitor.

Two years ago, I bought a Dell that came with a 20-inch Widescreen Flat Panel LCD Monitor.

Before that I had a 17" CRT monitor.

    What a difference!:)

Have used flat panel for about 6 years and added a second about two years ago. Do mucho video editing so needed the space, two monitors are almost a necessity.

When my CRT went out two yrs ago I borrowed another one to get me through the emergency (the owner didn't want it back). I then got a 22" flat panel and really like the ability to have multiple windows spread across the screen.
I put the CRT's out w/ the recycle.

I use a 22" Acer LCD as my primary monitor and a 20" Dell LCD as my secondary monitor
as I work in Photo Shop sometimes it comes in handy to run dual monitors with a lot of
usable real-estate and I have a 17" Acer LCD just setting here as a backup for a just in
    case scenario.

I'm going to retire the 22" Acer and 20" Dell pretty soon and replace them with either 27"
or 30" HP LCD's or larger if I can find the extra room for any thing larger than 30" that is
and give the 17" Acer and 20" Dell to family members and keep the 22" as a back up. ;)

I see no point in spending money on a meaningless "upgrade" to my existing 21" Viewsonic P810 and my 21" Sony Trinitron. When it fails, I'll replace it, not before! I have a deep dislike of this enforced "upgrade" culture for hardware and software; it wastes resources and creates a horrible crop of used equipment. Yes, I know, it's driven by the demands of the profit machine. Hard luck, my business in keeping the money I earn, not squandering it on fashionable items that I don't need.

For the last four years, I've been surfing the web with a 17" Samsung SyncMaster 914v. My one complaint is that the controls at the bottom are as confusing as any modern TV remote control, and there are only five buttons! Figuring out how those five buttons work in conjunction with one another is a sequential movement puzzle that rivals any rubik's cube variation.

Running Dual LCD Monitors...a 23" Samsung and a 22" Samsung. I have been running in dual mode for quite some time. My first was a 21" CRT and a 20" LCD then graduated to dual 20 ". I used this setup for a bit then graduated to my present setup.

At work I'm running dual 22" LCD

    Viewsonic A90 19" CRT (18" viewable). Why do they call it a 19" when it's only 18 "? I can't find anything that's 19 ".

Fujitsu Siemens 22" LCD and Baier 17" LCD TV/Monitor/DVD

I dislike enforced upgrades but losing the 17" CRT gave me so much more room I don't notice the extra panel. I use the second for static displays such as e-mail and - um - internet boards... so I don't have to keep shuffling windows around and occasionally switch to CCTV views or even watch a movie...

Sad, I know. But I'm seriously considering a third panel - and I'd still have room to spare from the old CRT.

I agree with you, 100%. My primary display is my 7 year old laptops display, working fine, and btw, if any piece of equipment, that is only 7 years old wouldn´t, I would be very disappointed with it.
I also have several old CRT monitors to use with my old desktop computers. One, that I could call my secondary display, is 15" Compaq SVGA from 1994, still working fine.
I will not replace working hardware, just because something new is available. This upgrade culture really creates a crop of used equipment, often equipment in good condition, abandoned just because people want new stuff. And about wasting resources, recycling old equipment doesnt make that upgrade culture environmentally friendly, recycling process and manufacturing new stuff uses resources, a lot more than using existing hardware until it fails.

4 17-19" CRT's stuck in a cupboard. Currently using a 17" flat panel on the laptop (the laptops LCD is dead :() and have a spare 17" LCD monitor for the tower if I ever decide to revive it. I can't imagine going back to CRT now apart from my LG flatron which is the closest to a flat screen I've seen on a CRT display.

Anyone in the Dundee area willing to pick up a few CRTs for free?

Though LCD is attractive, space saver and now affordable but i am still using CRT cause i had been using AutoCAD and all graphics softaware. The problem with all flat panel is that
1)they are poor in showing exact colour.
    2) If you draw a exact circle in LCD; it looks like ellipse, if you draw a square; it looks like rectangle.

in that case all the graphics designer choose second hand CRT if not avail first hand coz all the major brands already have discontinued CRT monitor.

When talking best picture quality, it is hard to beat a good quality CRT. Too bad they take up a lot of real estate and pump out a lot of BTUs.
