I don’t know where else to post this issue. The folks over at Malware and Virus Removal say my system’s clean, but it still has this propensity to lock itself up from time to time.

It started a few years back, and manifested itself in locking the box during a Norton scan. I tired to narrow it down to at least a folder that locked it up, and did, at least to some degree. But even moving that file or deleting it didn’t stop it from seemingly freezing.

There are some times it seems to happen more than others. FI, if I’m playing one of the Hoyle games, Version 5.00 2195 6601, and I leave it sitting in the middle of a game, it often locks the system up.

Also, Things like Google Earth will lock it pretty quickly, as will almost any deep scan of the system. It locks for Norton, and a couple other ones the guys over at the MVR forum suggested I run. The best I can make out, it seems to be somehow tied to video, memory, or both.

I have no idea why you have posted a DDS log - removed - especially as your computer has been given a clean bill of health over in the Malware & Virus Removal forum. These logs are not permitted outside of the Malware & Virus Removal forum.

I posed it because the last time I started a thread without it, I was directed to download DDS and post it, by you. I saw nothing that said it was required ONLY for that one forum.

I appreciate you’re removing it since it was unnecessary, but I certainly wouldn’t have posted it if I didn’t believe it was necessary!

I know that now, but it certainly wasn't clear, otherwise I wouldn't have done it. I won't do it again.

Change your Power setting for your monitor to never click Ok, then change your screensaver to none then click apply and then Ok. Some Hoyle and Interplay games especially the casino gambling games lock up the system when either of the above functions start . I had the same problem with Interplay and Hoyle games. Hope this helps.

Run Error Checking (CHKDSK) on each of your drives (all the hard drive partitions, if you have more than one).

You mention the HDD, graphics and memory, could there be a temperature problem inside the case. Do you clean the dust out regularly?

If it seems to be related to the power settings, look up for an update for the chipset drivers at the system (motherboard) manufacturer's website.

    All 3 drives check ok.

I do clean out the dust frequently, and I suppose there could be a heat problem. But that seems very unlikely because I can almost make the thing freeze, depending on what software happens to be running.

I shall see if I can find a new driver.

    Thanx

Monitor your temps with SIW - shows max, min, current under Hardware > Sensors.

You can also monitor the CPU alone with CoreTemp.

I sure wouldn’t mind having it run, but right now there’s an issue.

I can’t remove programs with appwiz.cpl, so I’m leery about installing something new. As I said, the freezing problem seems to have noting to do with temp since it happens almost predictably when scanning or using something that is video intensive like Google earth.

All that being said, if you believe having either SIW or CoreTemp might lead to finding a reason for the freezing, I’ll gladly install them.

It may elimiate temperature from the equatiom - SIW needs to be installed, but CoreTemp is a standalone. At least check out the CPU temps with CoreTemp when scanning or Google Earthing.

I tried to run coretemp, but it evidently won't run on Windows 2000

You are right - apologies, but please note ....

We encourage all members to complete their System Specifications which help us to help you :) Then I might have seen that you run W2k.

    No need to apologize.

I filled out a little bit of what the system is, but the rest will have to wait until I tear the box apart, unless you know of some way to get all the info from the system.

If you read the System Specification link I posted there is a full explanation there to obtain the data using SIW.

    I know - I wrote it :)

I thought since you said it had to be installed and I had no way to remove programs, you understood why I didn’t want to install it. I guess though that you don’t see that as an issue, so I’ll install it.
