I use news.yahoo.com as my home site in IE8 (XP-Pro).

Recently they started embedding highlighted/underlined words in their stories such that if you pass your cursor over the word you get an annoying popup that you can click on to get additional info on that particular word/topic.

I already have turned on the pop-up blocker in IE8 Privacy settings.

Is there anything else I can do to stop this particular kind of pop up?

    Simple process

    (1) Hover over one of the links to bring up a pop-up.
    (2) Click on the "?" in the upper right corner
    (3) Under the paragraph labeled "Don't Like the Shortcuts Pop-ups? ", select the link for "Switch them off ".

    Viola. Pop ups are gone.

  3. to hide this advert.

    Ho robsl99,
In my case, OrangeHound;s recipe worked for one advertisers ad links. I found out that there are many and was having, often , to repeat the process; often. Evan links eventually lead to a download link for a hosts file that had all the major ones blocked. Handy and much less work. Thank you OrangeHound but a bigger thank you to Evan. :)

    Phew,
When there was only a few of these I could handle them but it seems that some sites over use this and the minefields of mouseover advertisement popups were driving me nuts as many stuck or stayed open way to long. My sanity is once again saved. :D

I know how you feel Ann. Having those mouse advertisments popping up on me all the time was driving me crazy since some of those ads were impacting my browsing experience. I can't tell how many times I have blocked ads on other peoples computers for them and they have always been very greatful for me helping them out.

The way I see it, blocking annoying ads can make your browsing experience much more enjoyable. ;)

And let your free (advertising supported) Websites go broke in the process, but that doesn't bother you...

    Dear Arie,

I am not opposed to mouse over ads, or any ads for that matter, used responsibly and reasonably. It's the sites that have taken the concept and abused or over used it. As stated, between IE8 accelerators and mouse over ads, it seemed like every sentence had at least one word that caused a popup or required my attention to close it, once opened.

For one who uses the mouse as marker/pointer, while reading for reference and learning, this was a test of patience. Often I would lose what little patience I have left by the end of the day.

I know ad sponsors are desired by many sites. Just how does a mouse over ad work for such and how much income can this produce? I know it may be hard for you to be neutral or impartial but can you have no pity or empathy for one browsing such sites?

You've pressed my "Catholic Guilt" button and am considering deleting the modified Host file. :)

I do realize that the advertising supported websites do require ads in order to operate. Its just that over the years many websites have overused the amount of ads that they allow on their sites which can make it harder to find the information people are looking for.

Not to mention that some ads can be dangerous and can even get your computer infected with malware if you were to accidently click on them which I personally don't want to happen.

There are also millions of people who don't block ads when they visit the ad supported websites so I doubt that having a few million people who block ads will really impact the free websites in any negative way.

    Ari,

    re: RESOLVED
If you are serious about everyone using the checkbox for "Resolved" it would really be helpful to see it at the bottom of each reply (ie in the Quick Reply: Options panel along with "Quote message in reply?" ). Many of us rarely use "Quote message ..." but everyone needs "Resolved" at the end of each topic. Why make it harder for all of us to remember to check it by burying it in a drop down menu at the top? My fingers fly pretty fast when online and my brain doesn't always catch up in time!

PS: "Ads" are fine , but when it interfers with the ease of using a site and only adds frustration to the user ..... forgetaboutit!
