    [Resolved] Generic host process for win32 services has encountered

    Hello.

    Within the past two or thee days I've been receiving this message.

    "Generic Host Process for Win32 Services encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience. "

    I use Windows XP service pack 3. If it helps, I've also noticed that my Mozilla Firefox has been crashing three or four times a day. And also on my desktop I have the files, "xvidcore.dll" and "libmp3lame-0.dll ". I'm not sure how they managed to get there. Thanks for any help.

    STEP 1. Download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware: http://www.malwarebytes.org/mbam.php to your desktop.
    (Malwarebytes is free to use as a manual scanner. Payment is only required if you wish to have it run and update automatically which is not necessary for our purposes)

    * Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
    * At the end, be sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
    * If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
    * Once the program has loaded, select Perform Quick Scan, then click Scan.
    * When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
    * Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
    * When completed, a log will open in Notepad.
    * Post the log back here.

    The log can also be found here:
    C:\Documents and Settings\Username\Application Data\Malwarebytes\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\Logs\log-date.txt
    Or at C:\Program Files\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\Logs\log-date.txt

    RESTART COMPUTER!

    STEP 2. Download GMER: http://www.gmer.net/files.php, by clicking on Download EXE button.
    Alternative downloads:
    - http://majorgeeks.com/GMER_d5198.html
    - http://www.softpedia.com/get/Interne...ers/GMER.shtml
    Double click on downloaded .exe file, select Rootkit tab and click the Scan button.
    Do NOT use the computer while GMER is running!
    When scan is completed, click Save button, and save the results as gmer.log
    Warning ! Please, do not select the "Show all" checkbox during the scan.
    Post the log to your next reply.

    IMPORTANT! If for some reason GMER refuses to run, try again.
    If it still fails, try to UN-check "Devices" in right pane.
    If still no joy, try to run it from Safe Mode.

    RESTART COMPUTER

    DO NOT make any other changes to your computer (like installing programs, using other cleaning tools, etc.), until it's officially declared clean!!!

    Please download ComboFix from [color= "Red"]Here[/color] or [color= "#FF0000"]Here[/color] to your Desktop.

    **Note: In the event you already have Combofix, this is a new version that I need you to download. It is important that it is saved directly to your desktop**
    1. Please, never rename Combofix unless instructed.
    2. Close any open browsers.
    3. Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.
      • Very Important! Temporarily disable your anti-virus, script blocking and any anti-malware real-time protection before performing a scan. They can interfere with ComboFix or remove some of its embedded files which may cause "unpredictable results ".
      • Click on this link to see a list of programs that should be disabled. The list is not all inclusive. If yours is not listed and you don't know how to disable it, please ask.
      NOTE1. If Combofix asks you to install Recovery Console, please allow it.
      NOTE 2. If Combofix asks you to update the program, always do so.
      • Close any open browsers.
      • WARNING: Combofix will disconnect your machine from the Internet as soon as it starts
      • Please do not attempt to re-connect your machine back to the Internet until Combofix has completely finished.
      • If there is no internet connection after running Combofix, then restart your computer to restore back your connection.
    4. Please open Notepad
      • Click Start , then Run
      • Type notepad .exe in the Run Box.
    5. Now copy/paste the entire content of the codebox below into the Notepad window:

      Code:
      TDL::
      redbook.sys

    6. Save the above as CFScript.txt
    7. Then drag the CFScript.txt into ComboFix.exe as depicted in the animation below. This will start ComboFix again.

      [IMG]
    8. After reboot, (in case it asks to reboot), please post the following logs into your next reply:
      • Combofix.txt

    **Note: Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it's running. That may cause it to stall**

    Make sure, you re-enable your security programs, when you're done with Combofix.

    DO NOT make any other changes to your computer (like installing programs, using other cleaning tools, etc.), until it's officially declared clean!!!

    The first time I ran it, it said Combofix has detected Rookit activity and then restarted. I ran it again as you said to do dragging the notepad file and this is the log from the second time.

    I can see, you ran Combofix twice.

    You need to see the log from the second time I ran ComboxFix? I don't have the log from the first time I ran it, I only have the log from the second time. That is the log I provided to you, was I supposed to post the other one?

    In your C:\ directory, do you have ComboFix2.txt and ComboFix.txt, or just one log?

    I only have Combofix.txt. I'm guessing since I ran it twice, the first one was overwritten by the second one?

    That's OK.

    Delete your GMER file, download new one, run it and post fresh log.

    Are you still getting that initial error?

    The message would occur when I would leave the computer on overnight and return to it the following day. So I'm not sure if the message is gone or not, I'll have to update you tomorrow as far as that goes. But here is the GMER log you requested.

    GMER log looks good :)

    Uninstall AskBarDis.

    Unless you installed Viewpoint Manager knowledgeably...
    Go Start>Control Panel>Add\Remove (Programs and Features in Vista), and...
    Uninstall any of the following programs associated with Viewpoint:
    * Viewpoint Manager
    * Viewpoint Media Player
    * Viewpoint Toolbar
    This program does not do anything bad such as deliver ads or spy on you, but it is considered foistware ( "drive-by-install ") as it is installed without your consent through programs like AOl, AIM, Compuserve, etc.

    ================================================================

    1. Please open Notepad
    • Click Start , then Run
    • Type notepad .exe in the Run Box.

    2. Now copy/paste the entire content of the codebox below into the Notepad window:

    Code:
    File::
    c:\windows\system32\hinuhilu.exe

    Folder::
    c:\documents and settings\Owner\Local Settings\Application Data\vwvgnhdej
    c:\documents and settings\All Users\Application Data\Norton
    c:\documents and settings\All Users\Application Data\Symantec
    c:\documents and settings\All Users\Application Data\NortonInstaller

    DDS::
    uInternet Settings,ProxyServer = http=127.0.0.1:5555

    3. Save the above as CFScript.txt

    4. Then drag the CFScript.txt into ComboFix.exe as depicted in the animation below. This will start ComboFix again.

    5. After reboot, (in case it asks to reboot), please post the following reports/logs into your next reply:
    • Combofix.txt

    1. Please open Notepad
    • Click Start , then Run
    • Type notepad .exe in the Run Box.

    2. Now copy/paste the entire content of the codebox below into the Notepad window:

    Code:
    Folder::
    c:\program files\AskBarDis
    c:\program files\Ask & Record Toolbar

    Registry::
    [-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\~\Browser Helper Objects\{201f27d4-3704-41d6-89c1-aa35e39143ed}]
    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Toolbar]
     "{3041d03e-fd4b-44e0-b742-2d9b88305f98} "=-
    [-HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\clsid\{3041d03e-fd4b-44e0-b742-2d9b88305f98}]
    [-HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\TypeLib\{4b1c1e16-6b34-430e-b074-5928eca4c150}]
    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run]
     "Ask and Record FLV Service "=-

    3. Save the above as CFScript.txt

    4. Then drag the CFScript.txt into ComboFix.exe as depicted in the animation below. This will start ComboFix again.

    Oh, Ask and Record toolbar. I installed that myself, do I still have to follow those steps?
