I am using XP Home SP3 on a computer that previously had a virus and now after removing the virus, the folders will not open. However, they are accessible if they are menus on the start menu but otherwise they are not found/ Also, Removeable drives are stated as "not ready ". Any ideas?

    Folders inaccessible after virus removal

Try to open the Quarantine/Virus Chest in your anti-virus settings & restore the folder/file from there. Or, if they are not listed state the anti-virus name.

In the anti-virus settings find & disable an option like "Scan USB devices automatically/when plugged in "

EUnismo - Welcome to WindowsBBS :)

Removal of the virus or the virus itself may have affected your file associations ....

    Try this ....

    Start > Run > regsvr32 /i shell32.dll > Enter - note the space in the command after 2 and before /

This forces a re-registration of the associations relevant to Folders.

If that fails to resolve the problem head over to the Malware & Virus Removal forum and .....

Please read this as indicated at the head of the forum and post the logs requested in a new thread.

The virus software I used was Avast! but it is also no longer working. But it is stated as not being installed correctly. Also, the re-registration did not succeed.

Yes. It succeeded but did not fix the problem.

I used Bart PE to fix a log on/log off loop for another computer. Could BPE be used for this?

    Hello EUnismo,

I think your going to find that your are still infected or have been cleaned improperly or incompletely. If this was done correctly you would not have been left in this crippled state. What you are seeing is the result of registry changes and policies enacted that the virus is using to protect its self. More than likely this is going to be rootkit and you'd need a trained pros help anyway. I know I have made some assumptions here but if this were poker I believe I would win the the pot. :)

Until you get rid of the virus or have totally eliminated this as a possibility, any other repair will be fruitless.

Our malware/virus forum is one of the best and has trained experts who will walk you through and guide you in the programs, files and methods you will need. As Pete suggested you really need to read and follow the link he previously provided.

If that fails to resolve the problem head over to the Malware & Virus Removal forum and .....

Please read this as indicated at the head of the forum and post the logs requested in a new thread.

You may briefly re-describe your problem or include a link to this post.
