[Resolved] How to clean out the virus

Here is what I have done to restore my DELL computer so far. This being sent from my HP laptop both using XP. Message on infected DELL says "wuaucIt.exe is infected. Also "wscntfy.exe" is infected.
Brought up task manager to delete wuaucIt and it worked fine when I clicked on END Process.
Now located Windows on C: drive, went to System 32 and found file "wuaucIt ", right click to delete. Message says I do not have access to delete.
Tried to go to task mgr and it tells me now that task mgr is infected. End of story for now.

For openers is this a GOOD PROCESS to delete the wuaucIt files. If so, how can I get access to delete file in Windows/System32.

If all IS NOT GOOD PROCESS, do you have any other ideas.
Or should I just take my computer to a fix it shop and let them work with it.
Any help would sure help. Thanks.

I have read as well as tried to execute what WAS SUGGESTED. I was able to download the dds.scr file and put it on my desktop of the DELL computer.
However after trying to get it to work, I got the message that it was infected. Therefore unable to proceed in that area.
last night I tried to run AVG virus software to see if it would help but to no avail. I am still getting the popup from antispamwareblock.net showing 2 areas of virus--bankfox.A and win32/nugel. E.
This morning I got a new wrinkle. My screen comes up IE with addresses for pornostuff---www.porno.org with screen, www.nudity.com with screen view, and www.audult.com with full screen view. In other words, when I enter an address like ask.com the message states IE cannot open. Yet it will open for pornostuff.
Anyway the system is still sitting with THE VIRUS(?) and I cannot get DDS.SCR to work to give you any more information.
Any other ideas, please. Claire

Please download and run the below tool named Rkill (courtesy of BleepingComputer.com) which may help allow other programs to run.

There are 4 different versions. If one of them won't run then download and try to run the other one.

Vista and Win7 users need to right click Rkill and choose Run as Administrator

You only need to get one of these to run, not all of them. You may get warnings from your antivirus about this tool, ignore them or shutdown your antivirus.

* Rkill.com
* Rkill.scr
* Rkill.pif
* Rkill.exe

• * Double-click on the Rkill desktop icon to run the tool.
* If using Vista or Windows 7 right-click on it and choose Run As Administrator.
* A black DOS box will briefly flash and then disappear. This is normal and indicates the tool ran successfully.
* If not, delete the file, then download and use the one provided in Link 2.
* If it does not work, repeat the process and attempt to use one of the remaining links until the tool runs.
* Do not reboot until instructed.
* If the tool does not run from any of the links provided, please let me know.

Once you've gotten one of them to run then try to immediately run the following.

Now download and run exeHelper.

• * Please download exeHelper from Raktor to your desktop.
* Double-click on exeHelper.com to run the fix.
* A black window should pop up, press any key to close once the fix is completed.
* A log file named log.txt will be created in the directory where you ran exeHelper.com
* Attach the log.txt file to your next message.

Note: If the window shows a message that says "Error deleting file ", please re-run the program before posting a log - and post the two logs together (they will both be in the one file).

================================================================

Please download ComboFix from Here or Here to your Desktop.

**Note: In the event you already have Combofix, this is a new version that I need you to download. It is important that it is saved directly to your desktop**
1. Please, never rename Combofix unless instructed.
2. Close any open browsers.
3. Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.
• Very Important! Temporarily disable your anti-virus, script blocking and any anti-malware real-time protection before performing a scan. They can interfere with ComboFix or remove some of its embedded files which may cause "unpredictable results ".
• Click on this link to see a list of programs that should be disabled. The list is not all inclusive. If yours is not listed and you don't know how to disable it, please ask.
NOTE1. If Combofix asks you to install Recovery Console, please allow it.
NOTE 2. If Combofix asks you to update the program, always do so.
• Close any open browsers.
• WARNING: Combofix will disconnect your machine from the Internet as soon as it starts
• Please do not attempt to re-connect your machine back to the Internet until Combofix has completely finished.
• If there is no internet connection after running Combofix, then restart your computer to restore back your connection.
4. Double click on combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
5. When finished, it will produce a report for you.
6. Please post the "C:\ComboFix.txt" along with a new HijackThis log for further review.
**Note: Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it's running. That may cause it to stall**

Make sure, you re-enable your security programs, when you're done with Combofix.

DO NOT make any other changes to your computer (like installing programs, using other cleaning tools, etc.), until it's officially declared clean!!!

Download HijackThis:
http://free.antivirus.com/hijackthis/
by clicking on Installer under Version 2.0.4
Install, and run it.
Post HijackTHis log.
Do NOT attempt to fix anything!

NOTE. If you're using Vista, or 7, right click on HijackThis, and click Run as Administrator

I strongly suggest, you stay away from any registry tools, like Eusing Free Registry Cleaner
and RegCure, if you want stay out of more troubles. Here is why: http://miekiemoes.blogspot.com/2008/02/registry-cleaners-and-system-tweaking_13.html

================================================================

Uninstall Combofix:
Go Start > Run [Vista users, go Start> "Start search"]
Type in:
Combofix /Uninstall
Note the space between the "Combofix" and the "/Uninstall "
Click OK (Vista users - press Enter).
Restart computer.

================================================================

Print these instructions out.

NOTE. If any of the programs listed below refuse to run, try renaming executive file to something else; for instance, rename hijackthis.exe to scanner.exe

***VERY IMPORTANT! Make sure, you update Malwarebytes before running the scans.***

STEP 1. Download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware: http://www.malwarebytes.org/mbam.php to your desktop.
(Malwarebytes is free to use as a manual scanner. Payment is only required if you wish to have it run and update automatically which is not necessary for our purposes)

* Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
* At the end, be sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
* If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
* Once the program has loaded, select Perform Quick Scan, then click Scan.
* When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
* Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
* When completed, a log will open in Notepad.
* Post the log back here.

The log can also be found here:
C:\Documents and Settings\Username\Application Data\Malwarebytes\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\Logs\log-date.txt
Or at C:\Program Files\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\Logs\log-date.txt

RESTART COMPUTER!

STEP 2.
Post fresh HijackThis log.
NOTE. If you're using Vista, right click on HijackThis, and click Run as Administrator
Do NOT attempt to "fix" anything!

DO NOT make any other changes to your computer (like installing programs, using other cleaning tools, etc.), until it's officially declared clean!!!

How is your computer doing at the moment?

1. Download Temp File Cleaner (TFC)
Double click on TFC.exe to run the program.
Click on Start button to begin cleaning process.
TFC will close all running programs, and it may ask you to restart computer.

2. Go to Kaspersky website and perform an online antivirus scan.

1. Disable your active antivirus program.
2. Read through the requirements and privacy statement and click on Accept button.
3. It will start downloading and installing the scanner and virus definitions. You will be prompted to install an application from Kaspersky. Click Run.
4. When the downloads have finished, click on Settings.
5. Make sure these boxes are checked (ticked). If they are not, please tick them and click on the Save button:

• Spyware, Adware, Dialers, and other potentially dangerous programs
[*] Archives
[*] Mail databases
6. Click on My Computer under Scan.
7. Once the scan is complete, it will display the results. Click on View Scan Report.
8. You will see a list of infected items there. Click on Save Report As....
9. Save this report to a convenient place. Change the Files of type to Text file (.txt) before clicking on the Save button. Then post it here.

Post fresh HijackThis log as well.

So far so good. All that you request to be done is getting done and at least the virus/malware has stopped with the pornstuff. I opened my email and deleted alot of the messages that have accumulated. I really have not done much on the internet per se, as I figure I would like to leave it be until we get to the point of being done with all you are requesting.
I did read the point about not using registry tools and eventually will remove them. Maybe when this is done you can recommend some tools to use for cleaning the registry. Or is it even necessary to get into that part of maintaining a computer? I did notice the Swagbucks toolbar was removed and wondered if this was a source for picking up viruses? It really is not an absolute necessity if this would be true.
I am off to do your latest request. You truly have been a Godsend as I would never have believed there would be this much involved. This is my first and hopefully my last experience with getting a virus. It certainly has taught me to be more diligent about what I download. I also have learned that my knowledge about computers is really quite teeny-tiny. This issue is far beyond my scope. Thanks much
Claire

You're very welcome :)

The best registry approach is to leave it alone :)

Verify your Java version here: http://www.java.com/en/download/installed.jsp
Update, if necessary.
Uninstall all previous Java versions, through Add\Remove (Programs & Features in Vista).

==================================================================

Print this post out, since you won't have an access to it, at some point.

1. Open HijackThis.

2. Close all windows, except for HijackThis.

3. Put checkmarks next to the following HijackThis entries:

R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Local Page =
R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Local Page =
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings,ProxyServer = http=127.0.0.1:5555
R3 - URLSearchHook: (no name) - *{CFBFAE00-17A6-11D0-99CB-00C04FD64497} - (no file)

O9 - Extra button: (no name) - {CD67F990-D8E9-11d2-98FE-00C0F0318AFE} - (no file)

I have completed the latest steps and the defrag. I did the defrag and then continued on to delete the registry programs so I would never use them. Right now it is a case of just enjoying my updated, clean system. I realize that this can happen again but hopefully I can be more aware of what is sitting out there just waiting to cause problems.
Thank goodness the BBS forum is out there as well as all your knowledge of what to do, is available. I am a firm believer in the BBS forum and gladly will advise people to use it. Thank you once again for all your direction.
God bless,
Claire
