To have two hard drives in one machine and transfer the files from one to the other and does it matter which one is Master Drive and which is Slave Drive?

Most likely you'll have space and connectors inside your computer to fit a second drive (unless it's a laptop/netbook). Copying files is simple enough as long as you have appropriate access permissions to the source file and destination drive/folder.

Another simpler option you may wish to consider is an external HD (Usually using USB). This has the advantage of being portable and easily used to transfer data from on machine to another.

If you complete your system specifications (see below) it would help us to advise which type of HD you require.

If this is your main system it would be helpful if you add your system details to your profile. Please click on the link and follow those instructions it could save some time when resolving this or further issues.

A common error is to forget to show your system details in your profile

If you do add your system specifications be sure to do the above :)

The drive with the OS on it should be the Master.

I appreciate your response and the help you have offered, very much.
I am testing my skills on an old machine that is not the one I use here.
When I can get enough time to follow the directions for my own machine I will post the specs as you suggest and apologize for not doing that, yet.

I have found the info I needed from Seagate

    Just to clarify erevet...

Are you wanting to copy all the files (ie clone the drive) or just move some data files from one drive to the other?

EDIT: Posted at the same time as yourself... I take it you are wishing to clone the drive :)

I am basically trying to learn how to do this and just testing how to set it up to do this for a friend who wants me to do it for him.

I lacked the knowledge of how to set it all up and then use the right software.
I am using Windows XP Pro on both drives now connected to this one older test machine

 Always a good idea to practice an unknown and potentially dangerous procedure before doing it live.:D

I am in the process of learning how to apply the information given here and found from Seagate.
Once I have accomplished this task successfully, I will post the news and what I learned.
Thank you for the help and the forum

I have now accomplished the task of moving files from one disk to another on the same machine.

It is very simple to do, now that I know how, lol.

This thread can be labeled solved, so where can I label it as such?

I know I have seen it before but cannot find it now.

Open the case of the computer that you will be using to transfer the files.

With the hard drive you just took out in your hand, search the exterior for a diagram showing the different jumper settings for the modes.

On the rear of the hard drive, remove the jumper and fit it over the two pins that match the diagram for the 'Cable Select' or 'Slave' setting.

Find the wide cable that the hard drive in the computer case is connected to.

Connect this cable to the hard drive you have in your hand. The colored strip should be on the side nearest the power connector.

Find a power connector that is not hooked into anything. It will usually have 4 female pins.

Plug the power connector into the power slot in the rear of the hard drive

Plug the power, monitor, keyboard, mouse, and anything else you unplugged back into the back of the case.

    Turn on the computer.

The hard drive should be displayed in 'My Computer' as another drive if you are using Windows.

From my computer open the Slave Disk and choose a folder, a file or the desktop from users file.

Drag & drop the files from one hard drive to the other.
Wait for the transfer to complete.

I hope I have been through enough, for now anyway.
If not, here it is in complete details
